UPM completed the building of the new pulp mill in Uruguay and proceeded towards the project’s final stages. The completion of the construction work represents a significant project milestone even if the project’s work is still being done diligently. Over 20,000 people have worked on the different growth investment construction sites since the investment decision was made in July 2019, including the building of the UPM Paso de los Toros mill, the pulp terminal in the port of Montevideo, and the 11 housing communities surrounding Paso de los Toros.
To commence operating by the first quarter of 2023
The project is currently moving forward as the electrical, instrumental, automation, and commissioning work are completed. Both the power boilers and the auxiliary boilers have been put into service. The process air system, water intake, and water treatment were already operational. The recovery boiler testing has begun and is going well, and commissioning is moving along in every aspect of the processes. UPM’s second pulp mill in Uruguay is situated tucked away among the undulating hills of Centenario, on the southern banks of the Rio Negro. The project will be completed and the manufacture of 2.1 million tonnes of bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp per year will begin when the first wood chips are fed into its digester. By the end of the first quarter of 2023, the UPM Paso de los Toros pulp mill is anticipated to begin operating.
“It will be one of the largest, most competitive and most sustainable pulp mills in the world,” begins Bernd Eikens, Executive Vice President of UPM Fibres. He believes there is plenty of potential for pulp – and its by-products – as the global community works to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and plastics.
Meeting this rising demand sustainably is one of the pulp and paper industry’s most significant challenges, but Eikens believes the new mill is up to the task. “Pulp is at the core of the bioeconomy and the purpose for the company as a whole is to replace fossil fuel-based products with bioproducts.”
