UPM appoints new Senior Vice President Technology

UPM appoints Petri Hakanen as the Senior Vice President Technology (CTO) as of August 1, 2023. The newly appointed Senior Vice President Technology will join the office and will report to Winfried Schaur, Executive Vice President, UPM Biorefining & Technology. Petri will take control of the company’s research and development, new business development and will also keep a look on the ongoing investment management.

UPM is completely committed to the drive of sustainability and to fulfill this motto they are also planning and implementing large scale investment projects. With the new setup around Winfried Schaur and Petri Hakanen, the company plans to focus on scaling innovation, research and development. Jussi Pesonen, President and CEO of UPM, states that, “By appointing Petri Hakanen as CTO, we underline the importance of innovations and research and development for the future of UPM. We also strengthen the role of investment management, helping us to prepare for the execution of future large scale investment projects”

Petri Hakanen has been rendering his services to UPM for almost 30 years and has even undertaken various senior management positions. He has been leading some of the largest projects of UPM like handling the new pulp mill and related infrastructures in Uruguay. He is now bestowed with this new responsibility of the scaling up UPM Biorefining businesses, UPM Biofuels and UPM Biochemicals.

UPM puts in all efforts to deliver innovative renewable and responsible solutions for a better fossil free future. They work in six business areas: UPM Fibres, UPM Energy, UPM Raflatac, UPM Specialty Papers, UPM Communication Papers and UPM Plywood and now sets higher targets. Their targets include the active management of strong strategic portfolio. The company, therefore is trying to strengthen their capabilities by using fresh expertise to develop large scale investment projects besides the ongoing potential investments.
