Stora Enso created a plastic-free, corrugated board packaging solution in collaboration with Svenska Krämfabriken, that is specifically tailored to ship items with the least amount of air. All parties benefit from faster shipping because the packaging produces no plastic waste and can be readily opened and recycled. The Swedish Lotion Factory, or Svenska Krämfabriken, sells its goods through retailers, but as a pioneer in sustainability, it has adopted a Green PIedge that spans its entire value chain.

Reduced carbon emissions in packaging, distribution, and transportation are stated as a goal of the Green Pledge, as well as to eliminate all the plastic that was used in manufacturing. To boost output and the working environment, they also planned to implement a completely automated production line. Finding a low carbon material that helps them achieve their climate goals, for the boxes used to ship goods to stores was a priority for Svenska Krämfabriken. They also intended the box to be very practical, priorities being that the boxes needed to be simple to handle since the shops unpack and repack by themselves for their customers. As a result of the partnership work, 15 tonnes of plastic were used less overall, which is roughly equivalent to 1.5 million PET bottles. This surely discovers a new direction in terms of plastic-free and eco-friendly packaging solution.

Results of collaboration :

A plastic-free, recyclable and renewable box, and a new smart way of packing products in the box to save space

Reduced use of plastic in wholesale packaging by 15 tonnes per year

Saving space on pallets by 10-30%, saving 22 truckloads per year

10% lower energy use in production per year (equals 150 MWh)

Improved work environment with a Wrap-Around machine

Great customer response. The new packaging is easier to work with and it helps Svenska
Krämfabriken’s customers within e-commerce in efficiency, warehouse space and recycling

“This was a perfect project for us. Since we have the material they were looking for, we sell packaging machines and we have the knowledge and resources to develop custom-made packaging”, says Elisabeth Gyllengren, Account Manager Industry at Stora Enso.
