Schmalz

The brand-new needle gripper from Schmalz securely holds thick softwood fiberboards that weigh up to 100 kilograms. The company, which specialises in vacuum automation and ergonomic handling systems, introduces this new line of products that is particularly suited for large-area challenges. Large air-permeable component handling is made safe and comfortable with this build.

Large surfaces combined with porousness pose a difficult manual handling conundrum. The innovative needle gripper from the vacuum specialist extends up to 80 needles to safely lift and carry air-permeable components like softwood fibreboards with an optimal insertion angle and optimised needle arrangement, as opposed to the vacuum that J. Schmalz GmbH typically uses. Together, needle grippers and JumboErgo make the appropriate lever solution for a broad range of applications. Schmalz’ latest needle gripper range can be specially customised. Because of the modular design of its strong and lightweight aluminium construction, it can be uniquely customised for a broad range of applications and workpiece formats.

Reliably lifts up to 100 kilograms

A workpiece can be raised starting at 20 mm in thickness. The new gripper receives a connection disc from the vacuum expert that is compatible with the JumboErgo. It is optional to connect to a chain hoist or a quick-change adaptor. The maximum load is determined by the nature of the material; given that each module can support up to 25 kilograms, the needle gripper can lift a maximum weight of 50 or 100 kilos, depending on the quantity of modules. A pneumatic control system, which includes a safety module, and two or four needle modules with counter-rotating needle positions each make up the needle gripper.

Schmalz places a high priority on user safety when there are so many tips involved. The gripper recognises whether it has a workpiece underneath the needles, the operator must affirm twice that the load has been released, and switching flags always display the location of the metal tips.
