BSW Timber picked up an award for its commitment to helping young people last month – and just missed out on being an overall winner at the Highland Business Awards.
BSW won the West Highland heat for Developing the Young Workforce but fell just short of the top prize, which was presented at a sell-out ceremony in Inverness.
Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Inverness and Central Highland launched earlier this year and forms part of the wider Scottish Government Youth Employment strategy. It aims to foster a culture of collaboration between schools, partner agencies, employers, parents and young people to effectively bridge the gap between learning and working.
Andy Maxtone, programme manager for DYW Inverness and Central Highland, commented: “We would like to congratulate BSW Timber on their recent regional win, celebrating their commitment to engaging with local young people by fostering collaboration with key groups of influence as well as the provision of a diverse range of apprenticeship and graduate opportunities.”
BSW was lauded for its apprentice programme, which actively engages with school children from a young age through its presence at career fairs and other events. The company currently has seven apprentices working at its Fort William site across a variety of disciplines, including a bespoke saw doctor apprenticeship – the first of its kind in the UK.
Tony Lockey, Group Learning and Development Manager at BSW, said: “BSW Timber is honoured and incredibly pleased to win the DYW regional awards”
“We are passionate about the learning and development of our young employees, and to be part of this awards process really does hearten not just our training team but everyone in our business and local community.” He concluded.
