#TheFutureIsForestry award to be launched in June

 Thursday, May 2, 2019

#TheFutureIsForestry is one of the most concerned award ceremonies regarding forestry. Through this prize distribution, the sponsors are distributing the awareness towards the benifits and positive sides of forestry among people. The prize invites students and young professionals to create a short film or write an essay on the future of the industry – with £500 for the best essay and the best video. The subject for the essay or video is: How can farmers and landowners be motivated to plant more trees to deliver a wide range of benefits, especially mitigating climate change?

Anyone aged 30 or under – and students of any age – can enter an essay of up to 1500 words (plus visual materials and accompanying text) and/or a video of between 1 and 2 minutes.

There will be three prizes in each category – of £500, £250 and £100 – and the winners will receive their prizes at a presentation evening at the Houses of Parliament. The competition – sponsored by Tilhill Forestry, BSW Timber and Forestry Commission – will be officially launched at a Westminster reception of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Forestry on June 11th. Last year’s winner, Harper Adams Masters student Lorna Johnson, will read an extract from her winning essay at the event.

Full entry details will appear on Confor’s website immediately after the launch event and entries will close on Monday October 14. The presentation of the awards will take place at Westminster on November 26.

Confor CEO Stuart Goodall said: “We had an excellent and positive response to the essay prize last year and the presentation evening was a wonderful event, with students and young industry professionals mixing with a wide range of forestry stakeholders and politicians. We have had a very encouraging response to the additional video prize and think this year’s competition will be even bigger and better.

“Everyone involved in the programme is committed to developing future talent and linking our students and young professionals into the wider forestry and wood processing industry.” Mr. Goodall concluded.

Peter Whitfield, Business Development Director of Tilhill Forestry, said: “Everyone at the reception was thoroughly impressed by the calibre of the young winners and their entries. The future looks bright for forestry and wood in 2019 and Tilhill and BSW are very happy to sponsor for this excellent and innovative competition.”
