Zurich will soon get its all new timber terminal to welcome guests from far and wide. New Dock A facility will be installed in Zurich Airport. There will be a mass timber terminal also in the airport. There will a control tower too with the Dock. Although this is not first time to have a wooden airport but this significant project combines modernity technology and heritage together.

A company called Bjarke Ingles Group (BIG) which is a Danish architecture firm has partnered with a US firm called HOK for the project. This innovative planning will not only make the airport look more elegant but will also create a sustainable alternative.

The project is planned to begin in 2030. The project is planned to be finished by 2032. The project includes air-side retail, lounges, a new air traffic control tower and office. The immigration hall will also receive an extension.

The wood will be largely collected from the local resources. The interiors of the new construction will also be created with wood. The project reflects the alpine buildings and pays homage to the rich heritage of Switzerland’s wood crafting tradition.

The structure of the main attic is extremely beautiful one with a symmetric V-shaped structure. The timber columns will be used within the attic. The linear skyline will be visible from the attic and daylight will enter the entire attic.

Founder of BIG, Bjarke Ingles said as airports are growing evolving, the international guidelines and safety requirements are also changing. The safety measures and the requirements are becoming more complex.

Bjarke Ingles said the project has been created to answer the complexities of the new age. He also stated that the project will have spatial experience of mass timber space, quality architectural finish and organisational principle altogether. The inauguration of this project is awaited by many.
