Setra has been contracted to provide locally made cross-laminated timber and glulam for the Lumi district of Uppsala. There, Vasakronan is converting a concrete structure from the 1970s into modern, environmentally friendly office space. Setra has been making deliveries since December, totaling 1,200 cubic metres. Setra and Vasakronan collaborated for this project that includes six cross-laminated wood beams for the new floors in three blocks, a new atrium connecting the buildings with cross-laminated wood footbridges, and glulam for the atrium’s roof structure.

Theres Jansson, sales representative for Setra’s building solutions comments that this is the first time they are collaborating with Vasakronan and it has been a very positive journey so far. Vasakronan’s clear environmental and sustainability profile was applauded by Setra, mentioning how it has taken them up in the forefront of the circular economy and recycling.

Usage of cross-laminated timber has saved weight

Three blocks will make up Lumi, which will be joined by an atrium. There will be seven levels in all, each with about 15,500 square metres of airy, light-filled office space. Small stores, eateries, and other services will be housed on the renovated street level. The Uppsala neighbourhood of Lumi is a component of the Södra city urban development initiative, which is taking shape between the Resecentrum transportation hub and the Fyrisn river. Three floors will be added to an existing office building without altering the foundation. A very substantial concrete facade needs to be taken down and replaced with something much more lightweight. Vasakronan has distinguished itself in the building sector by taking charge of purchasing and manufacturing while working with its own experts. Prior to any individual procurement, careful planning is done.

“By using timber beams made of cross-laminated timber instead of concrete, we save weight. And as we’re dismantling the concrete facade at the same time, there’s no need for underpinning,” explains Vasakronan’s project manager Jonas Wahlström.

“In our procurement dialogue, we make an assessment based on a wide range of parameters. These include sustainability, digital maturity, geographical proximity and security of supply. It’s important that we have suppliers that provide security for us as customers, and that was one of the reasons why we chose Setra.”

The architect behind Lumi is Anders Tväråna of White Arkitekter.
