IMA Schelling involves innovative material logistics for high-performance saws

 Wednesday, June 2, 2021

The IMA Schelling Group equips the material processing industry with precision saws for the highest demands. The Precision division of IMA Schelling also optimises material handling using intelligent process logistics. As a supplement to the precision saws fm 10 and fm 12, the new Automatic Manipulation Device (AMD) takes over fully automatic material handling when cutting heavy aluminum plates. This makes AMD the ideal process partner for processing full aluminum formats.

IMA Schelling Precision calls its new combination of linear robot and air cushion manipulation surface the Automatic Manipulation Device, or AMD for short. Originally designed as a special solution on behalf of the customer, IMA Schelling has included the logistics concept in its series program due to high demand. The AMD shows its strengths especially when cutting full-size aluminum panels with high weights. It takes over the entire strip handling in the sawing process up to the discharge of the finished formats. After the saw has been loaded, the automatic sawing process begins. The manipulation surface is equipped with air cushion technology and enables the aluminum plates to be moved in a manner that is gentle on the material. Sections on the manipulation area enable the “intermediate parking” of the strips without them becoming blurred.

The tool parameters adapt to the plate thickness and the material properties of the processed material. Since the AMD takes over the complete handling of the sawing process, the cutting is fully automatic. Finished parts and large residues are channeled out of the machine on roller conveyors and removed there by a crane. The automated process increases the utilization and thus the performance of the saw significantly. The precise system control also increases the cutting quality.

The central element of AMD is software-controlled production planning. It enables multiple orders to be cut in one step. Heavy raw panels only have to be guided to the saw with anticipatory planning. That is a clear plus in productivity and efficiency. The optimization software plans the cuts in such a way that there is only a minimum of leftovers and waste. The machine automatically disposes of waste that can no longer be used in a container on the saw.

With the innovative combination of saws and material logistics, IMA Schelling Precision has achieved a new level of automation for aluminum blanks. Users benefit from significantly increased productivity while at the same time optimizing the use of aluminum as a raw material.
