As the world marks Earth Day, the conversation around climate action often intensifies—only to fade shortly after. At Stora Enso, climate action is not confined to a single day or campaign. It is a continuous, evolving commitment embedded into everyday operations and long-term strategy.

Recognizing that meaningful climate progress requires sustained effort, Stora Enso has developed a comprehensive Climate Resilience Plan designed to guide its actions for decades to come. This approach reflects a fundamental belief: climate action is not a milestone to reach, but an ongoing journey requiring consistent, measurable progress.

To address common misconceptions, the company highlights five prevalent myths about climate action:

Myth #1: Climate action is all about future targets
Reality: Concrete results are already being delivered. Since 2019, Stora Enso has reduced emissions from its own operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 61%, while emissions across its value chain (Scope 3) have decreased by 38%. These reductions underscore that climate action is driven by tangible efforts across both operations and the broader value chain.

Myth #2: Emissions are only a factory problem
Reality: A significant portion of emissions originates beyond direct operations, including raw materials, logistics, and product use. Addressing this requires collaboration across the entire value chain—from product design to partnerships with suppliers and customers.

Myth #3: Only large, radical changes make an impact
Reality: While transformative decisions are important, consistent incremental improvements are equally critical. Initiatives such as enhanced energy efficiency, electrification, and optimized fuel choices collectively contribute to meaningful emissions reductions.

Myth #4: Cutting emissions is everything
Reality: Climate action also involves building resilience. This includes preparing operations for future climate risks and ensuring sustainable forest management—the foundation of the company’s business. Emissions reduction and resilience-building must progress together.

Myth #5: Net zero means the problem is solved
Reality: Achieving net zero is not an endpoint. Certain emissions remain challenging to eliminate, and continued progress depends on advancements in technology, infrastructure, and collaboration. Climate action, therefore, remains a long-term, adaptive process.

A commitment that endures

Stora Enso’s approach reflects a broader shift in how organisations must engage with climate challenges—moving beyond symbolic gestures toward sustained, systemic change. By integrating climate considerations into every level of decision-making, the company aims to contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future.

The climate resilience plan outlines how climate-related considerations are integrated into the Group’s strategy and operational decision-making, as well as Board oversight. As part of this plan, Stora Enso also commits to phasing out coal, which represented 2% of the Group total energy consumption in 2025.

“Our new climate resilience plan converts ambition into tangible actions. Designed to support our climate targets, the plan reinforces the commitment to decarbonisation of our business to enable long-term resilience and sustained value for our stakeholders” concludes Hans Sohlström, President and CEO, Stora Enso.
