FIMMA + Maderalia 2024 prepares to bring 120 talks and workshops at the much awaited woodworking event

FIMMA + Maderalia, that is about to return from May 14-17 at Feria Valencia is about to bring helpful lectures, talks and technical sessions that will be delivered during the woodworking event. In total more than 120 presentations are scheduled to be given, from ten purpose-built stages, with topics covering almost every aspect of the industry: from the latest advances in technology, manufacturing and industry 4.0 to trends in design, architecture and timber construction, making this FIMMA + Maderalia’s most extensive and wide-ranging programme of talks in at least the last ten years.

FIMMA + Maderalia takes place in barely two weeks’ time and professionals visiting will have as many as ten spaces and forums to choose from where these talks will be given. There will be stages in nearly all the halls, in amongst the exhibition stands and specific exhibit areas.

Level 2: spotlight on wood and technology

The first thing that visitors will see at Feria Valencia is the two halls on Level 2, which will be housing FIMMA, the machinery and technology fair. Hall 1 on Level 2 is where the FIMMA Future zone will be, a dedicated area showing the latest manufacturing technologies and processes. It will also be the venue for daily demonstrations of 3D printing and industry 4.0.

Just opposite, in Hall 2 on Level 2 is where one of the biggest education spaces at this year’s FIMMA + Maderalia is being located. Dubbed ‘Clubmadera Maderaula FIMMA’, the space is being run by CESEFOR and will feature up to ten blocks of educational sessions delivered between Tuesday and Thursday. These educational sessions will be led by CESEFOR’s own technical experts and experts from the industry’s leading edge companies and will focus specifically on all the possible aspects of using wood as a structural element and for construction, such as prefabricated items, execution techniques and processes, erection of light framework buildings and energy efficiency, amongst others.

Level 3: from contracts to innovation and new materials

Four halls are being dedicated to Maderalia, located on Level 3 and combining a mix of exhibition space populated by stands with areas for special exhibits and talks. Hall 2 on Level 3, for instance, will feature a large installation by José Manuel Ferrero titled Work{H}ub, and will also be the venue for a series of lectures, panel discussions and technical presentations centred on the relationship between design, architecture, wood, sustainability and industrialization.

This series of lectures will be delivered by eminent design and architecture professionals including Héctor Ruiz, Jesús Plaza of Requena y Plaza, Jaime Sanahuja, Felipe Veites of Ruiz Larrea Arquitectura and José María Medrano of Medrano + Saez.

Hall 3 on Level 3 will feature the ‘Esenciales Pasarela Innovación’ zone, where visitors will be able to see the most innovative items at FIMMA + Maderalia, selected by a committee of experts from the Instituto Tecnológico AIDIMME. There will also be demonstrations in this area over the four days of the fair, featuring wood finishes and coverings, the toxicity of materials, quality and safety and regulations regarding wood flooring and cladding.

Hall 4 on Level 3, however, is where most of the activities and lectures will be taking place, particularly because this is where the second of CESEFOR’s education spaces is being located. Designated ‘Clubmadera Maderaula at Maderalia’, it will feature several blocks of sessions addressing timber construction and the value of this material as a live, sustainable and versatile element. Topics set to be addressed include the Código Técnico de Edificación (Technical Construction Regulations), building to high specifications and for energy efficiency and the decarbonization process.

This hall will also be home to a multi-purpose Lecture Room. One of the sessions will be delivered by AEIM and will focus on forests, wood and traceability in the new bioeconomy and there will also be more technical presentations on the innovative training being delivered by the CESUGA centre in Galicia and the use of Big Data in companies’ international development.

Without even leaving this hall, professionals coming to FIMMA + Maderalia will be able to visit an authentic 100% wood-built house, erected as part of the ‘La Casa Módulo Hábitat Mediterráneo’ project. There will also be an area in this hall dedicated to demonstrations, organised by AIDIMME and including personalised advice on issues relating to forest management, R&D geared to timber construction and the main parameters for building with wood.

More parallel events

Lastly, FIMMA + Maderalia will be staging a number of other activities, in different locations, including a trade press conference to be held by ALVIC at 13.00 on opening day; a general meeting for the Plataforma Tecnológica Forestal PTFOR at 10.00 on 15th May in the Sala Ausiàs March and a workshop on circular economy in the wood industry that will take place in the same room at 10.30 on the 16th and will include a presentation on the Ecowoox initiative.

Another stand-out event is the València Open Wood initiative, that will take industry professionals to see the city’s emblematic buildings in which wood is a key element of the construction. The tour is scheduled for the first day of the fair, 14th May, starting at 16.00 and will take in the Palau de la Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia Government Building) and the Facultad de Teología (Theology Faculty). At the end of the tour AIDIMME experts will present a review of the non-destructive properties of wood.
