Stora Enso and EcoTelligent Oy engages into establishing mass timber as the preferred material for telecommunication support structures. Through environmentally friendly towers that seamlessly integrate into their surroundings, the collaboration is expected to offer a substitute that will lessen the reliance on steel and concrete in telecom masts.

Laminated veneer lumber will be used in the construction of the 5G and future towers (LVL). LVL is a mass-produced wood product that is twice as robust as steel in comparison to its weight. Telecommunications equipment may be easily supported by the material due to its strong load-bearing capability. LVL may be erected on site in modules without the use of heavy machinery, unlike steel and concrete, which are both heavier materials to carry. LVL also has a small carbon footprint and is a renewable material.

Importance of taking emissions into account is growing
The CEO of EcoTelligent, Gyöngyi Mátray, claims that there are thousands of telecommunication towers currently being built throughout the world. The importance of taking emissions into account in this industry is thus growing. This is where Stora Enso’s commitment to switching from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy comes into play. It perfectly complements EcoTelligent. Despite being factory-made and consisting of many layers of glued plywood, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is nevertheless less expensive than structural steel I-beams. Compared to steel, wood of both types is also simple to attach other components to. Furthermore, special handling with heavy equipment or a crane will be necessary for the beams because steel is significantly heavier than any comparable-sized wood product. These unique handling techniques unquestionably raise the building’s cost.

“We are proud to enter into a partnership with EcoTelligent who, like us, strives to push boundaries and demonstrate the many possibilities with wood,” said Lars Völkel, Executive Vice President, Division Wood Products, Stora Enso. “As one of the largest sawn wood producers and private forest owners in the world, we play an important role in the global transformation to a more sustainable world. With this partnership, we intend to develop a competitive and reliable supply chain for the growing market of sustainable wooden telecom towers.” Read more news on Stora Enso
