Sonae Arauco-tree plantation

Employees of Sonae Arauco in Meppen, a key European manufacturing hub for the global wood-based materials producer, successfully concluded a substantial local planting initiative on November 8th, 2025, in a powerful display of corporate and family commitment to environmental stewardship. This event, the first of its kind in the Meppen area, saw approximately 50 employees and their family members dedicate their time to planting 1,000 young Sessile Oaks (Quercus petraea) in a nearby forest area. This concrete, hands-on action transforms a strategic company goal—sustainability—into a shared local value, simultaneously strengthening the region’s ecological profile and fostering a deep sense of community spirit among the plant’s personnel.

The volunteer team, working under the guidance of Plant Manager Frank Günnemann, focused its efforts on a carefully prepared forestry plot close to the Meppen facility. The initiative’s core purpose is to accelerate the conversion of the area into a climate-resilient mixed woodland.

The choice of the Sessile Oak is particularly significant in the context of German forestry. The species is recognised by experts for its strong drought tolerance due to its deep-reaching root system, a crucial advantage as Central Europe faces increasingly frequent and intense periods of heat and drought. By integrating this robust native species, the project directly contributes to long-term environmental protection and enhances regional biodiversity, ensuring the forest ecosystem is better equipped to withstand the challenges of climate change.

“It is immensely gratifying to witness such strong participation from so many colleagues and their families in making this project a reality,” said Frank Günnemann. “This focused planting event proves that sustainability at Sonae Arauco is not just a strategic objective outlined in a corporate document, but a deeply felt, shared value. Every single tree we have planted today is a living symbol of our profound connection to the Emsland region and our responsible commitment to future generations.”

The biocircular economy in action

This reforestation effort is a direct extension of Sonae Arauco’s overarching global sustainability strategy. As one of the world’s foremost manufacturers in the wood-based materials sector, the company operates under a sophisticated biocircular economy model.

This model fundamentally redefines the production cycle, positioning wood as a renewable, recyclable, and essential resource for a greener future. Key tenets of this strategy include:

By engaging in local, physical initiatives like the Meppen planting day, Sonae Arauco reinforces its vision to deliver a positive impact that transcends its industrial output. The company aims to lead by example, demonstrating that a commitment to a sustainable wood supply chain must be harmonized with tangible actions that directly benefit the local environment and society where it operates.

Beyond the significant environmental benefits, the planting day served as a powerful employee engagement and community-building exercise. Bringing employees and their families together for a shared, physically rewarding task highlights a culture where environmental responsibility is integrated into personal and professional life.

Such activities boost morale and reinforce the corporate value that the future of the wood forestry industry—and indeed, the planet—relies on collective action and a long-term perspective. By planting Sessile Oaks, which can live for hundreds of years, the volunteers are investing in a future forest that will provide ecosystem services, including habitat and climate regulation, for many generations to come.

As the global demand for sustainable building and design solutions continues to rise, driven by the need to find alternatives to carbon-intensive materials like steel and concrete, the role of companies like Sonae Arauco and their continuous investment in the resource base becomes ever more critical. The Meppen initiative is a small but vital step in promoting the regeneration of productive, resilient forests that are essential to the wood-based bioeconomy of Europe.
