Södra research foundation allocates SEK 9.8 Million to advance forestry and forest industry innovation

June 23, 2026

The Södra Research Foundation has awarded nearly SEK 10 million to ten research initiatives aimed at supporting the future development of forestry and the forest industry. The latest funding round attracted significant interest from researchers across Sweden, highlighting the growing importance of innovation in addressing both environmental and industrial challenges.

A total of 72 applications were submitted during the most recent call for proposals. Following an extensive evaluation process, ten projects were selected to receive combined funding of SEK 9.8 million.

The supported initiatives cover a diverse range of subjects. Several projects focus on practical forestry management issues. Others explore industrial applications and emerging technologies that could strengthen the competitiveness of the forest sector in the years ahead.

Research into thinning methods forms part of the programme. Root rot management is also being investigated. Moose browsing impacts on forest productivity will be studied as well. These topics remain important for forest owners seeking to improve long-term sustainability and economic performance.

Several projects are centred on technological development. Artificial intelligence will be applied to road assessment systems in one initiative. The use of advanced digital tools is expected to improve efficiency in forest infrastructure management. Data-driven solutions continue to gain attention across the sector.

Another funded project focuses on larch breeding. Researchers aim to develop improved genetic material capable of delivering stronger performance under changing environmental conditions. Forest resilience remains a key priority for both industry and policymakers.

Industrial innovation also features prominently among the selected projects. New applications for tannin are being explored. Researchers will investigate its potential use in water purification processes. Interest in bio-based materials continues to grow as industries seek alternatives to conventional chemical solutions.

The design and optimisation of timber structures are also included within the funding programme. Demand for wood-based construction materials has increased steadily in recent years. Research in this area could contribute to more efficient building methods and enhanced material performance.

Packaging solutions represent another area of focus. The forest industry is increasingly exploring sustainable alternatives to fossil-based packaging materials. New product development is therefore regarded as a strategic opportunity for future growth.

Collectively, the funded projects address several important societal and commercial challenges. They are intended to generate knowledge that can support future decision-making throughout the forestry value chain. New technologies will be tested. Practical applications will be examined. Long-term industry needs will also be considered.

The selected initiatives reflect the broad role forestry plays within Sweden’s economy. The sector contributes to employment, renewable material production and climate-related objectives. Continued investment in research is therefore viewed as essential.

Henric Brage, member of the Södra Research Foundation and Head of Innovation and Strategy at Södra, welcomed the strong response to the latest funding round.

According to Brage, the volume and quality of applications demonstrated the high level of research activity currently taking place within forestry and forest industry disciplines. He also acknowledged the efforts made by all applicants during the competitive selection process.

Research was described as a critical driver of future development for both forestry and industrial operations. The funded projects are expected to contribute valuable insights and practical outcomes.

Brage noted that it would be particularly interesting to follow the progress of the selected initiatives as they move from concept to implementation. The projects will now enter various stages of development and investigation.

The foundation has confirmed that another funding opportunity will be made available later this year. Researchers and institutions will have the opportunity to submit new applications during the autumn call.

The Södra Research Foundation has played a significant role in supporting sector-wide innovation for three decades. Established in 1995, the organisation was created to encourage research that benefits forestry, wood processing and related industries.

Since its formation, more than SEK 300 million has been distributed through grants. Around 250 projects have received support. Funding has been awarded to Swedish universities, colleges and research institutes working across a broad range of forestry and industrial disciplines.

The foundation conducts two funding rounds each year. This approach enables a continuous flow of new ideas and research initiatives. It also helps strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.

As sustainability, digitalisation and resource efficiency continue to reshape forestry, research investment is becoming increasingly important. Emerging challenges require innovative solutions. New knowledge is needed.

Through its latest funding allocation, the Södra Research Foundation is supporting projects that address current industry priorities while helping prepare the forest sector for future demands. The selected initiatives demonstrate how scientific research, technological development and practical forestry expertise can work together to strengthen the long-term resilience and competitiveness of Sweden’s forest-based industries.
