Together with Essity and Dow, packaging and paper business Mondi has developed recyclable secondary packaging for Essity feminine care products that uses less fossil-based material and post-consumer recycled material. The packaging is intended to provide strong sealing abilities in addition to the same high level of protection as the prior packaging.

Reduced carbon footprint

The search for sustainability in sanitary products has been a long persistent one. By utilising renewable resources, a byproduct of paper manufacture, and post-consumer recycled material, the new packaging from Mondi helps Essity achieve its sustainability goals. This lowers the carbon footprint.

Essity’s range of sanitary towels, Bodyform, Libresse, Nana and Nuvenia will be packed in this new, eco-friendly solution by Mondi. It is produced using circular feedstock in accordance with the mass balance method recommended by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC).

Previously, Essity’s feminine care towels were contained in bags made of 50% sustainable materials. However, after conducting in-depth analysis and testing, Mondi came up with a new recommendation that is in line with Essity’s packaging objectives: aim toward 100% recyclable materials and utilise up to 85% biomass, renewable, or recycled material in all bags, with up to 25% made of recycled plastic.

Mondi’s EBITDA up by 65%

The issue, according to Marjo Kuisma – regional sales consumer flexibles at Mondi, is to discover the ideal blend of recycled and renewable content that preserves product quality and the production efficiency that Essity already enjoys. The best alternative was ultimately determined after a number of options were evaluated. The solution work towards full recyclability and to use recycled plastic in the packaging, the company demonstrates.

In the first half of its fiscal year, the packaging giant reported “strong” performance across the board, with EBITDA up 65% year over year to €1.2 billion, including its shuttered Russian operations.
