Metsä Group- appointment

With an aim to bolster its sustainability in forestry, Metsä Group has announced the appointment of Ilkka Köntti as Senior Vice President, Production, for its Wood Supply and Forest Services division. Effective September 1, 2025, Köntti will also join the company’s management team, bringing with him nearly two decades of deep industry knowledge and operational expertise.

This leadership change marks a significant step for Metsä Group as it continues to focus on optimising its wood supply chain and enhancing its forest management services. The company, a leading player in the global forest products industry, is known for its commitment to responsible forestry and the sustainable use of renewable resources. Köntti’s new role places him at the helm of these crucial operations, ensuring the seamless flow of raw materials from forest to customer.

A career rooted in forestry

Ilkka Köntti’s professional journey is a testament to his extensive experience in the forest sector. His career, spanning over 20 years, has been defined by a series of roles that have provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the entire forestry value chain. Before his new appointment, Köntti spent four years at Metsä Group, where he served in key positions such as project and district manager within the Wood Supply and Forest Services division. During this time, he was instrumental in developing and implementing strategies that improved efficiency and operational performance.

Before joining Metsä Group, Köntti held significant roles at other major industry players, including a nearly 20-year tenure at Stora Enso, a global leader in renewable materials. His experience also includes work with a forest management association, providing him with a holistic perspective that encompasses not only corporate operations but also the on-the-ground realities of forest stewardship. This rich background makes him exceptionally well-suited to lead Metsä Group’s production efforts, which are a cornerstone of the company’s business model.

In his new capacity, Köntti will be responsible for a wide range of critical functions. His duties will include overseeing the production management of wood supply and forest services, managing resource allocation, and supervising harvesting operations. He will also be in charge of the execution of forest management services and the transport of both wood and wood energy to customers. These responsibilities are central to Metsä Group’s mission of providing high-quality wood products while maintaining the highest standards of environmental sustainability.

Leadership transition

Köntti will report directly to Juha Jumppanen, Metsä Group’s Executive Vice President, Wood Supply and Forest Services. Jumppanen’s leadership and vision for the division will guide Köntti’s strategic direction, ensuring alignment with the company’s broader goals. This appointment comes as Hannu Alarautalahti, who has served as SVP, Production, since 2014, steps down from his role. Alarautalahti will leave the company by mutual agreement on September 30, 2025. His long-standing contributions have been instrumental in shaping the division’s success over the past decade.

Commenting on the transition, Juha Jumppanen expressed his gratitude for Alarautalahti’s service. “I would like to give my warm thanks to Hannu for his committed and long-term work in Wood Supply,” Jumppanen said. This sentiment reflects the respectful and collaborative nature of the leadership change, which is poised to ensure a smooth transition for the team and stakeholders.

The woodworking industry is at a pivotal point, with a growing global demand for sustainable and responsibly sourced materials. Companies like Metsä Group are leading the charge, demonstrating that economic success and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand. The appointment of a seasoned professional like Ilkka Köntti underscores Metsä Group’s commitment to these principles. His expertise in managing complex supply chains and his focus on operational excellence will be crucial in navigating the challenges and opportunities of the modern forestry landscape.

As the industry continues to evolve, the role of a leader in production and wood supply becomes increasingly important. It requires not only a deep understanding of logistics and technology but also a strong commitment to sustainable practices. Köntti’s background suggests he possesses both, making him a valuable asset to Metsä Group as it looks to the future. His leadership is expected to drive further innovation in forest management techniques, optimise harvesting processes, and enhance the overall efficiency of the wood supply chain, ultimately benefiting customers and the environment.
