Metsa Board considers building its new cartonboard mill at its Kaskinen site in Finland.

In order to better serve its clients and support their expansion, Metsa Board declared in May 2022 that it is looking for opportunities to expand the folding boxboard capacity in either Finland or Sweden. The company began pre-engineering for a new folding boxboard mill with an annual capacity of roughly 800,000 tonnes at the Kaskinen mill site in Finland as a consequence of the study.

Final decision to be made in 2024 at the earliest

Pre-engineering for the new folding boxboard mill is based on world-class resource and production efficiency and fossil-free manufacturing. The consumption of raw materials, energy, and water per tonne of folding boxboard produced would be substantially lower thanks to the finest available technology than it is in the mills that are currently in operation. The long-term research and development efforts of Metsa Board in the manufacture of premium lightweight paperboards would be advantageous to the product concept. Technical design, design of logistics and infrastructure plans, and equipment tenders are all part of the pre-engineering phase. The process of conducting an environmental impact assessment and obtaining an environmental permit will be started as part of the pre-engineering. At the earliest, 2024, is when the corporation projects that a decision on an investment might be made.

One of the biggest manufacturers of folding boxboard and white kraftliners in Europe is Metsa Board. “This potential investment is consistent with Metsa Board’s plan to expand in the field of fibre-based materials and modernise our industrial processes. Our goal is to have the most resource-efficient mill in the world, cutting-edge competitiveness, and a product design that allows for a smaller carbon footprint. There will be an increase in demand for packaging manufactured from renewable raw resources to replace plastic. With additional environmentally friendly packaging options that support the circular economy, we hope to satisfy this need “says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsa Board.
