MEDITE SMARTPLY has announced a €75 million investment programme to support the next phase of medium-density fibreboard (MDF) manufacturing at its Clonmel facility, coinciding with the company’s 50th anniversary of the MEDITE brand. The investment is set to strengthen the site’s long-term competitiveness while reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing in Ireland.
Described as the largest current investment in MDF production in Western Europe, the programme aims to enhance manufacturing capabilities and improve supply resilience for customers across Ireland, the UK and continental Europe.
A key focus of the investment is the renewal of critical infrastructure at the Clonmel plant. Planned upgrades include the installation of a new biomass boiler system, alongside modernised fuel handling and dryer systems designed to improve operational reliability, optimise process control and maintain consistent product quality across the facility’s 24/7 production operations. The initiative also represents a significant step in the company’s sustainability strategy. By replacing natural gas with renewable biomass as its primary energy source, the facility will eliminate natural gas usage and reduce Scope 1 carbon dioxide emissions, supporting MEDITE SMARTPLY’s broader climate commitments.
Beyond environmental benefits, the investment is expected to secure the long-term future of the Clonmel manufacturing site, support skilled employment and strengthen regional supply chains while positioning the facility as a future-ready hub for MDF production.
