Germany’s woodworking sector is on the cusp of a start-up revolution, despite cultural and financial hurdles slowing entrepreneurial growth. With a traditionally cautious business culture marked by risk aversion and slower processes, German start-ups have faced challenges compared to other countries. Yet, universities, funding programs, and specialized start-up centers are pushing the boundaries, fostering a vibrant ecosystem increasingly geared toward technology, platform businesses, sustainability, digitalization, and artificial intelligence.
Responding to this surge, LIGNA—the world’s premier trade fair for woodworking and wood processing—is hosting its second LIGNA.FutureSquare and Startup Area from May 26 to 30, 2025, in Hall 12/A04. This platform is designed to showcase emerging companies within woodworking and those from adjacent sectors eager to break into the wood industry or collaborate on innovative solutions.
Stephanie Wagner, LIGNA Project Manager at Deutsche Messe AG, highlights the strategic role of the Startup Area: “It reflects the industry’s desire to provide young companies easy access to the woodworking and mechanical engineering sectors. Exhibiting alongside VDMA members, many attending LIGNA for the first time, accelerates vital networking opportunities.”
The Startup Area features 14 pioneering young companies—twice as many as in 2023—from Germany, Austria, Poland, and the Netherlands. Participants like Artesa, BlastGate, COISS, deepl.ai, eco2grow, and Talen Robotics will present innovations that align with LIGNA 2025’s key themes: CONNECTIVITY, SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION, and ENGINEERED WOOD. Offerings span cutting-edge software for process optimization, resource-efficient timber construction, circular economy models, and CO₂ emission measurement tools.
Start-ups are also pitching their concepts on the LIGNA.Stage during dedicated sessions, encouraging direct dialogue with industry decision-makers.
Ger Gerdes, Senior Project Manager at VDMA Woodworking Machinery Association, states, “Creating spaces where new ideas flourish is essential to shaping the future. LIGNA.FutureSquare’s Startup Area is that catalyst, connecting fresh, dynamic companies with established players.”
The VDMA Startup-Machine, spearheaded by Juliane Salten, is committed to expanding this exchange, recognizing start-ups as vital engines driving woodworking technology’s evolution.
Through LIGNA.FutureSquare and the Startup Area, the woodworking industry is clearly embracing a future powered by innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, signaling exciting developments on the horizon for global wood processing and manufacturing.
