Wood products manufacturer Koskisen has successfully commissioned new channel kilns at its Järvelä sawmill in Finland. The investment represents another significant milestone in the company’s long-term programme aimed at expanding production capacity and enhancing operational efficiency.
The newly installed channel kilns increase the sawmill’s drying capacity by approximately 15 per cent. Improved drying performance is also expected to deliver higher product quality and greater consistency across production batches.
Additional storage facilities linked to the drying process have been introduced. These upgrades simplify material handling and improve internal logistics throughout the site. As a result, smoother production flows can now be achieved.
The investment addresses a critical stage in the manufacturing process. Drying operations often influence overall production efficiency in sawmills. By expanding capacity in this area, Koskisen is reducing operational constraints at the downstream end of production.
The development supports the company’s strategic objective of increasing annual sawn timber production. Current output stands at approximately 400,000 cubic metres. Koskisen is targeting a second-phase production level of 450,000 cubic metres per year.
Greater utilisation of existing infrastructure is expected to generate operational benefits. Production volumes can be increased without the need for major additional manufacturing facilities. This approach helps lower average production costs while strengthening the competitiveness of the Järvelä site.
The new channel kilns are supported by an energy system that takes advantage of cooperation between Koskisen’s plywood and sawmilling businesses. Heat generation resources are shared across operations. This creates efficiencies while supporting sustainability objectives.
A district heating pipeline connecting the company’s factory locations was completed at the end of 2025. The infrastructure enables rising energy requirements to be met effectively. Significant new energy investments are therefore not required to support the expanded drying capacity.
According to Koskisen Chief Executive Officer Jukka Pahta, the company has advanced steadily along its planned growth pathway for the Järvelä sawmill. He noted that the commissioning of the channel kilns represents the latest practical step towards achieving the annual production target of 450,000 cubic metres.
Further development initiatives are expected to continue. The company remains focused on improving efficiency, productivity and long-term competitiveness across its sawmilling operations.
Investment activity at the Järvelä facility has been extensive in recent years. Over the last five years, nearly EUR 90 million has been invested in the sawmill and closely integrated operations. The investment programme has focused on strengthening production capabilities and modernising key processes.
Among the most significant projects completed during this period have been the construction of a new saw line and a new log sorting line. These upgrades have contributed to higher operational performance and improved processing efficiency.
The latest kiln installation forms part of this broader transformation programme. Through continuous investment, the Järvelä sawmill is being positioned among the most competitive sawmilling facilities in Finland.
The company’s strategy combines production growth with efficient resource utilisation. Wood raw material is processed as thoroughly as possible, including the use of by-products generated during manufacturing. This approach supports both operational efficiency and responsible resource management.
Koskisen also continues to emphasise the role of wood products in long-term carbon storage. Durable wood-based products can retain carbon for decades, contributing to broader sustainability goals within the construction and manufacturing sectors.
As an international wood processing specialist, the company is recognised for its customer-focused approach and operational flexibility. Ongoing investments at Järvelä demonstrate Koskisen’s commitment to strengthening its position in the evolving wood products industry while supporting future growth opportunities.
For the financial year 2025, the Group reported revenue of EUR 355 million, reflecting the scale of its operations and its continued focus on developing value-added wood processing capabilities.
