Keepmoat expands sustainable construction efforts through partnership with The Pallet LOOP

Keepmoat has strengthened its commitment to sustainable construction by partnering with The Pallet LOOP, a reusable pallet initiative designed to reduce waste across the UK construction supply chain. The collaboration is expected to encourage greater pallet recovery and reuse across the housebuilder’s nationwide operations while supporting wider circular economy objectives within the industry.

As one of the UK’s leading partnership housebuilders, Keepmoat delivers high-quality homes and mixed-tenure communities through close collaboration with local authorities, Homes England, registered housing providers and landowners. The business focuses on regenerating sites and providing affordable housing where demand continues to grow.

The latest partnership adds another practical measure to the company’s sustainability programme. It is intended to reduce timber waste while improving material management across active developments.

Reusable Pallets to Be Introduced Across Live Sites

Under the agreement, reusable green LOOP pallets will be adopted across Keepmoat’s 79 live construction sites.

The initiative aims to extend the working life of timber pallets that have traditionally been treated as disposable items after a single use. Instead of being discarded, pallets will be collected, inspected, repaired where necessary and returned to the construction supply chain for repeated use.

This approach is expected to reduce the number of pallets sent to skips while supporting more efficient use of timber resources.

Material recovery will be encouraged. Timber waste can therefore be reduced.

Addressing Waste Across the Construction Sector

Pallets remain an essential part of transporting construction materials throughout the United Kingdom. Approximately 20 million pallets are produced for the construction industry each year.

Despite their value, many pallets continue to be disposed of after one delivery. This practice increases demand for new timber while generating avoidable waste and disposal costs.

The Pallet LOOP has been developed to address this challenge through a closed-loop recovery system. Manufacturers and suppliers are encouraged to use durable green pallets that are specifically designed for multiple uses.

Once construction materials have been unloaded, the pallets can be collected, refurbished if required and returned for future deliveries.

This process supports more responsible resource management.

Financial Incentives Encourage Returns

An important feature of the scheme is the financial incentive offered for pallet recovery.

Keepmoat will receive between £2 and £4 for every green LOOP pallet that is returned, with the payment depending on the pallet’s condition.

The incentive is designed to encourage efficient collection while rewarding construction sites that actively participate in the recovery programme.

The model supports both environmental and operational objectives.

Disposal costs may also be lowered.

Sustainability Strategy Supports Circular Construction

The partnership forms part of Keepmoat’s broader Sustainability Strategy, which places strong emphasis on reducing waste generated across construction sites.

Improved pallet recovery is expected to contribute towards greater site efficiency by reducing unnecessary disposal activities and encouraging better material handling practices.

Keeping timber products in circulation for longer also aligns with wider industry efforts to reduce pressure on natural resources while improving environmental performance.

Construction companies are increasingly adopting circular economy principles. Material reuse has become an important element of these strategies.

Industry Leaders Highlight Practical Benefits

John Bowden, Sustainability Director at Keepmoat, said reducing waste remains a key priority for the business and described pallet reuse as a practical step towards achieving that objective.

He noted that working alongside The Pallet LOOP will help retain valuable timber within the supply chain, reduce the number of pallets entering waste streams and promote more circular construction practices. He also highlighted improved operational efficiency and lower disposal costs as additional benefits of the partnership.

Ian Broad, Sales Director at The Pallet LOOP, welcomed Keepmoat’s participation and said the company’s involvement demonstrates how housebuilders can actively contribute to reducing waste across the sector.

He explained that construction pallets have historically been viewed as single-use products despite their continued value. The Pallet LOOP seeks to change this perception by encouraging pallet recovery while rewarding businesses through its PayBack scheme.

Industry Adoption Continues to Grow

Keepmoat joins a growing network of construction manufacturers and suppliers already participating in The Pallet LOOP programme.

Companies including British Gypsum, Isover, Superglass, Wienerberger, CEMEX and Gyproc have already incorporated reusable green pallets into their supply chains.

As participation increases, more reusable pallets are expected to circulate throughout the construction sector, reducing demand for new timber while helping businesses minimise waste.

The continued expansion of the initiative reflects growing industry recognition that practical resource management solutions can deliver both environmental and commercial value.

With sustainability becoming an increasingly important priority across UK construction, collaborative programmes such as The Pallet LOOP demonstrate how businesses can work together to improve material efficiency, reduce waste and support long-term circular economy goals without compromising operational performance.
