Rosi-grenzebach

Estonian Plywood (ESTPLY), a leading producer of high-quality birch plywood in Northern Europe, is once again partnering with Grenzebach Group to enhance its manufacturing capabilities. In November 2025, the Estonian plywood manufacturer placed an order for the latest addition to their production line—another veneer dryer, along with Grenzebach’s state-of-the-art AI-powered veneer scanner, ROSI (Real-Time Optical Surface Inspection). This new order marks the continued success of the longstanding collaboration between the two companies, with the new technology promising to elevate the quality assurance process to new heights.

Pioneering AI Integration for Enhanced Quality Control

The integration of Grenzebach’s ROSI system into both the new and existing production lines represents a significant leap toward digitalization in plywood manufacturing. ROSI is a cutting-edge artificial intelligence-driven system designed for real-time, highly precise surface inspection of veneer. The technology leverages adaptive LED lighting and high-resolution cameras to detect surface defects, dimensional deviations, and structural inconsistencies, ensuring that only the highest quality veneer is produced.

One of the standout features of ROSI is its ability to automatically classify results based on customer-specific quality criteria, or “recipes,” without the need for complex programming. This advanced functionality allows operators to achieve top-tier quality assurance with minimal effort, making the system both intelligent and user-friendly. Benedikt Allendorf, Product Manager at Grenzebach, explains that ROSI’s integration into the plywood production process will not only provide exceptional precision but also improve operational efficiency and productivity.

“This system is a significant enhancement for both new and retrofitted production lines,” Allendorf adds. “With ROSI, we are taking quality assurance to a whole new level while providing an easy-to-operate solution that seamlessly integrates into existing systems.”

A Partnership Built on Trust and Innovation

The decision to once again rely on Grenzebach’s technology comes after a successful partnership between the two companies. ESTPLY, part of the Lemeks Group, operates one of the most modern plywood plants in Northern Europe, producing industrial-grade birch plywood. Since its opening in 2019, the company has continually invested in state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies to maintain its competitive edge in the market.

Ando Jukk, Member of the Supervisory Board at Estonian Plywood, highlights the role that Grenzebach’s technology plays in the company’s ongoing commitment to high-quality production: “The decision to implement ROSI is an important step toward digitalization and quality assurance. The combination of intelligent technology and user-friendly operation convinced us.”

CEO Timo Hermlin also acknowledges the integral role Grenzebach has played in ESTPLY’s success, saying, “We are pleased to have Grenzebach as a partner who understands our requirements and delivers innovative solutions.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of Digital Wood Processing

The collaboration between Grenzebach and Estonian Plywood underscores a forward-thinking approach to plywood production, focusing on cutting-edge technologies that streamline operations and ensure the highest standards of quality. The commissioning of the new veneer dryer and ROSI scanner is set for Q4 2026, and both companies are confident that this new investment will help them stay at the forefront of the digital wood processing revolution.

By investing in AI-driven technology, Estonian Plywood is not only improving its internal processes but also signaling a commitment to the future of sustainable, digitalized manufacturing in the woodworking industry. As the integration of AI becomes more widespread in manufacturing, this partnership serves as an example of how traditional industries like plywood production are evolving to meet the demands of modern markets.

The continued collaboration between Grenzebach and Estonian Plywood reflects a shared vision for a smarter, more efficient future in the wood processing sector. With the addition of AI-powered quality control systems like ROSI, Estonian Plywood is well-positioned to continue its growth and maintain its reputation for excellence in the plywood industry.
