An influential leader of the Polish construction market, Budimex, has successfully concluded the autumn edition of its flagship social initiative, “Przystanek Zieleń” (Green Stop) this year. The sixth edition of the programme focused on the Wilanów and Mokotów districts, resulting in the planting of 220 new trees. This latest phase brings the project’s total impact to an impressive 1,000 trees and 50 shrubs introduced to the capital’s landscape since the initiative’s inception in 2023.
The “Green Stop” initiative is far more than a simple CSR activity; it is a meticulously planned environmental offset directly linked to one of Warsaw’s most crucial infrastructure investments: the construction of the tram route to Wilanów.
This massive project, executed by Budimex, has already transformed travel for residents by connecting Wola, Ochota, and Western Railway Station with the southern districts. The new route has slashed travel times from Wilanów to Śródmieście (the City Center) to a record 30 minutes during peak traffic hours.
While the official investor, Warsaw Trams, is responsible for 600 replacement plantings as part of the modernisation, Budimex’s “Green Stop” provides an additional 1,000 trees, ensuring that the construction of modern transit does not come at the cost of the city’s “green lungs.”
To ensure the longevity and health of the new urban greenery, Budimex collaborated with experts in dendrology and arboriculture. The species selected for the “Green Stop” program were chosen for their resilience to urban stressors, biodiversity value, and aesthetic appeal.
Notable species planted across previous and current editions include:
In this latest edition, Budimex worked directly with 17 Warsaw housing communities and cooperatives. By planting trees within managed residential areas, the project creates “micro-oases” that serve as a respite from the urban hustle.
“The Green Stop is not only about new plantings, but also an opportunity for meetings and cooperation between residents,” says Anna Karyś-Sosińska, Member of the Management Board of Budimex and Director of the Human Resources Management Division. “We want urban space to develop not only functionally but also in a friendly and comfortable way. Together, we create places where you can simply relax.”
This initiative reflects a broader shift in the Polish construction industry toward ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals. Budimex’s 2023–2026 strategy, titled “We change the world for you! And we change ourselves,” highlights the company’s commitment to biodiversity and community relations.
Budimex is establishing a new standard for how general contractors handle their facilities’ environmental impact by fusing social greenery initiatives with extensive civil engineering. The business has already declared that the “Green Stop” initiative will continue in 2026, growing to other sites in collaboration with regional cooperatives.
