Another successful year was recorded for tools, equipment, and machinery in the furniture and woodworking industry in the year 2022. In terms of the data collected by the Studies office of Acimall, a Confindustria-member association that represents the industry’s businesses, total production increased by 4.6 percent from the previous record in 2021 to reach a value of 2.646 billion euros.

Exports remained largely consistent, totaling 1.757 billion euros (+1% over 2021), while domestic market sales reached 889 million euros (+12.1% over the great result of last year), setting a new record for both of these categories. The trade balance improved to a positive result of 1.5 billion euros, around the same amount as in 2021 with an increase of 0.2 percent, thanks to an increase in import (257 million euros, up 5.3% over 2021).

Italian industry witnesses 10.8% escalation

The industrial companies have continued to achieve favourable outcomes in 2022, albeit at a slightly slower growth pace than in the previous two years. Actually, it would have been impossible to perform better because in 2022, a highly complex situation, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, skyrocketing energy prices, the closure of many markets, and the ongoing difficulty in obtaining components and raw materials compounded the effects of the pandemic. These factors had a more significant impact in the fourth quarter of 2022, with outcomes that had a negative influence on the balance at the conclusion of the year.

The Italian “client companies” did, however, continue to spend consistently thanks to strong incentives from the government, which enabled them to update their fleet of machinery. Italian woodworking and furniture industry production witnessed an escalation of 10.8 percent in 2022 as compared to last year. In terms of apparent consumption, 1.146 billion euros were spent.

Forecasting for 2023 is more difficult than ever right now because of the well-known global challenges, the general economic climate that does not appear to support family spending or new mortgages for home purchases or renovations, and the significant technological advancements made by businesses recently. However, cautious optimism is definitely suggested, which could result in a significant confirmation of the levels achieved this year.
