Woodex 2019: A bigger and better edition

 Wednesday, December 4, 2019

The 16th edition of Woodex has welcomed the finest from the woodworking and furniture manufacturing industry in a grand way. “For us, an exhibition is an event for concluding contracts and Woodex is an event that pays off. That’s how it’s been in the past and how it’ll be this year as we’ve already concluded several interesting contracts,” reported Andrey Samsonov, CEO of Felder Group Russia on the opening day on December 3rd. The exhibition will run till December 6th.

Aside from the 355 companies from across the world presenting their latest equipment and tools for woodworking, furniture production and wood waste utilisation, the show kicked off with a packed programme of business events. The opening day drew full halls for each event. The day began with the analytical session ‘An overview of the current state of the forestry industry: logging, sales markets, sales, growth drivers, prices, investment projects, forecasts, and issues’. Industry experts shared the preliminary results of 2019 and discussed current prices, the wood market, and predicted changes in the logging industry.

The focus also fell on the lumber market, the situation in warehousing, and the risks involved in investing in the Russian timber industry. In the afternoon, the conference ‘An overview of the wood panels industry: an analysis of the current situation, cases from manufacturers’ brought together manufacturers and suppliers of wood panel materials, as well as experts in developing investment projects. Alexander Shalashov, (General Director of VNIIDREV), presented a report on ‘The state and prospects of developing wood board production in Russia’, giving the real picture of the construction of production plants for chipboard, MDF and OSB.

Sergey Emelyanov (Director of Particleboard and Chipboard Production, IKEA Industry Novgorod) talked about ‘Modern technologies and sustainable development of the particleboard and chipboard IKEA Industry Novgorod’. He focused on the pressing issues of energy efficiency and sustainability in production: “We are not leaders in chipboard production, but we’re constantly thinking of ways to use existing equipment as efficiently as possible.”

Mikhail Karpachevsky from FSC Russia spoke about their certification system in terms of the quality of natural resource management. His report raised many questions, such as the grey area of the legality of supplied timber and the number of certified forests throughout the world and in Russia. Eugene Walter (Walter Construction) shared his experience in implementing investment projects, emphasising the importance of the design phase. “Two thirds of the time should be spent on design, otherwise, at the construction stage, significant extra waste will appear,” he said.

The conference ‘Manufacturing automation in the furniture industry’ closed Woodex’s first day, which was moderated by Alisa Konyukhovskaya, Executive Director of NAURR. Yuri Taganov spoke of KUKA Russia’s experience in using industrial robots in woodworking, Dmitry Kainov shared FANUC’s solutions for automating furniture production, and Mikhail Prokopyev presented Yaskawa’s robotic solutions for woodworking and furniture production. We also heard from Sergey Labutin (GeoS CAD Development Center) with a report ‘Integrating the K3-Mebel complex into the automation process of a furniture business, Dmitry Gyumyushlyu, (I-TOOLS) on ‘Digital automation in the furniture industry’, and Gleb Frolov (Phaeton) on ‘Software for automating wooden housing construction and furniture production’. Three more days of business and networking await the industry at Woodex 2019 until 6 December.
