Acimall

The woodworking and furniture technologies sector is at a pivotal moment, navigating a blend of global challenges and opportunities. Emerging from statistical surveys by Acimall, the Italian manufacturers’ association, key issues include the increasing need for business expansion, labor shortages, and the impact of geopolitical conflicts like the Ukraine and Palestine crises.

2024 Industry Performance

Acimall’s final figures for 2024 reveal a decline in the Italian production of woodworking machines, tools, and accessories—totaling €2.42 billion, down by 8.7% from 2023. Export values also dipped, with a notable drop in imports, highlighting shifts in trade dynamics. Despite these setbacks, Italy remains a global leader in woodworking technology.

Geopolitical Impacts and Tariffs

The geopolitical landscape continues to affect the industry, with tariffs, particularly from the United States, adding pressure. Companies are grappling with the need to balance domestic demand with crucial export markets, which remain the industry’s compass.

Comparative Global Performance: Italy, Germany, and China

In comparison to Germany and China, Italy’s export value dropped by 8% in 2024, primarily impacted by the ongoing challenges in key markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, China emerged as the leader in global trade, surpassing Germany, with increased exports and reduced imports, signaling a structural shift in the industry.

Looking Ahead

The latest data suggests the woodworking and furniture technology industry faces crucial decisions: maintaining technological leadership and adapting to new market realities. As global competitors like China advance, Italy’s companies must focus on innovation, quality, and service to remain competitive in a transforming market.

Dario Corbetta, Acimall’s director, emphasizes the importance of these ongoing challenges, calling for increased attention to technological gaps and after-sales partnerships as critical factors for future growth.
