The UK timber industry reached an important milestone with the launch of the first-ever Women in Timber Conference, a dedicated event that brought together more than 120 women from across the timber supply chain for a day of learning, networking, and shared experience. The conference marked a significant step forward for a sector traditionally dominated by men, creating a supportive platform for women at all stages of their careers.

Attendees ranged from early-career professionals attending their first industry event to senior leaders shaping the future of timber, forestry, and wood-based manufacturing. The diversity of roles and experience in the room highlighted the breadth of opportunity within the timber industry and the growing appetite for greater representation and connection.

The Women in Timber initiative was created by Laura Qualters, Membership Development Manager at Timber Development UK (TDUK). What began as a simple concept—bringing women together in a welcoming and inclusive setting—quickly grew into a national event. Speaking at the conference, Qualters described the atmosphere as energising and collaborative, underlining the importance of creating spaces where women can share ideas, challenges, and ambitions openly.

The programme combined keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, alongside informal networking opportunities that encouraged one-to-one conversations. A charity raffle held during the event raised more than £1,700 for the Timber Trades’ Benevolent Society (TTBS), reinforcing the sector’s commitment to supporting its people.

Opening the conference, Christella Golby, General Manager of TTBS, highlighted the charity’s role as the only organisation in the UK dedicated exclusively to supporting those working in the timber trade. Founded in 1897, TTBS provides financial assistance and practical support, including help with essential living costs, wellbeing initiatives, and mental health support. Her presentation emphasised the human foundations of the timber industry and the importance of community resilience.

Personal development and visibility were key themes throughout the day. LinkedIn trainer Judy Parsons delivered an interactive session on building a strong professional presence, encouraging attendees to see LinkedIn as a personal branding tool rather than a static CV. Her practical guidance on profile optimisation and networking resonated strongly, particularly with those seeking to raise their profile within the industry.

A global perspective was offered by Michelle Buckland, Chief Commercial Officer at Miro Forestry, who shared insights from the company’s plantation forestry operations in Ghana and Sierra Leone. Managing more than 22,000 hectares of forest and employing around 4,000 people, Miro has made significant efforts to increase female participation across its operations. Buckland highlighted how diversity has delivered tangible operational benefits, alongside strong environmental and community outcomes.

Sustainability and leadership were central to a session delivered by Claire Toomey, Head of Sustainability and ESG Lead at Howdens Joinery. She reflected on her career journey and the role of resilience in navigating both professional growth and personal responsibilities. Claire also spoke about timber’s role as a renewable material and its importance in achieving net-zero targets, stressing the need for strong ESG strategies rooted in responsible sourcing.

Succession planning and leadership development were addressed by Camilla Fish, Managing Director of SCA Products UK, who shared her unconventional route into the timber sector. Her experience highlighted the value of structured development programmes and the importance of recognising potential over prior industry experience.

The conference concluded with reflections on confidence, mentorship, and teamwork from Rosie Wise of Benchmarx Kitchen & Joinery, reinforcing the message that collaboration and authenticity are powerful drivers of success.

The inaugural Women in Timber Conference demonstrated strong momentum for change within the sector. More than a single event, it signalled the start of an ongoing movement to build a more inclusive, resilient, and future-focused timber industry in the UK.
