The Central European forestry industry’s reliance on high-tech machinery to manage climate change impacts received a boost with the opening of a new service centre. Wahlers Forsttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, the general importer for the globally renowned Finnish manufacturer PONSSE, inaugurated its fifth location in the strategically vital Temnitzpark industrial estate near Neuruppin, Germany, on October 2nd and 3rd, 2025. This expansion is more than just a new address; it represents a crucial investment in the operational backbone required to maintain the region’s fleet of sophisticated cut-to-length (CTL) forestry machines. It also reinforces the deep, decades-long partnership between Wahlers Forsttechnik and PONSSE, which is considered the world’s leading manufacturer of CTL technology.

Founded in 1934, Wahlers Forsttechnik is a family-owned enterprise now steered by its fourth generation. The company’s long history in the field provides a foundation of trust and specialised knowledge that is essential in the complex world of modern timber harvesting. Since 1993, Wahlers has served as the exclusive general importer for PONSSE machinery across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This alliance has established Wahlers as PONSSE’s largest dealer worldwide, a testament to its scale and market influence in one of Europe’s most important timber regions.

The addition of the Temnitz facility significantly strengthens the company’s service footprint. It joins existing, established centers in Germany and Austria, creating a comprehensive network of five major sites strategically distributed to ensure rapid response times and expert maintenance for forestry professionals. The new location is purpose-built on a substantial 7,400-square-meter plot, offering specialised services that include:

  • Dedicated, modern workshops designed for the maintenance and repair of large-scale forest machines, such as PONSSE harvesters and forwarders.
  • A comprehensive, high-capacity spare parts warehouse engineered for quick access and distribution across the region.
  • A dedicated training area for the continuous professional development of technicians and machine operators, focusing on the latest advancements in machine operation and digital systems.

This strategic investment near Neuruppin positions Wahlers to better serve customers across the heavily forested regions of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which are key areas for timber production in Eastern Germany.

To celebrate the grand opening and introduce the new facility to the community, Wahlers Forsttechnik hosted a two-day open house event. The program was designed not only for industry partners but also for local communities and families, providing a firsthand look at the sophisticated technology that drives sustainable forestry today.

A major highlight of the event was the live demonstrations of modern PONSSE forestry machinery. Visitors witnessed the precision and efficiency of the latest harvesters, which fell, delimb, and cut trees into exact lengths directly in the forest, minimising waste and environmental impact—a key principle of the CTL method.

Furthermore, the company offered an immersive, hands-on experience through its 3D simulator. This allowed visitors to try their hand at operating a cutting-edge harvester in a realistic, controlled virtual environment. Simulation training is becoming a non-negotiable part of modern forestry education, enabling operators to practice complex tasks and familiarise themselves with advanced digital systems—such as PONSSE Manager for fleet management and PONSSE Active Crane—before entering the forest.

The event also underscored the company’s commitment to the community, featuring a program of activities tailored for children and families, emphasising the connection between technology, sustainability, and rural employment.

The German forestry and timber industry is a vital economic sector, employing over a million people and contributing significantly to the nation’s commitment to sustainable resource management and carbon sequestration through wood products. The Temnitz location is a response to the increasing demand for specialised, high-quality technical support driven by the complexities of modern machinery.

As climate change necessitates adaptive forestry practices—such as mitigating storm damage, managing bark beetle infestations, and transitioning to mixed, climate-resilient forests—the reliability of harvesting equipment is crucial. The new Temnitz service hub ensures that highly specialised technicians are readily available, drastically reducing potential downtime for machines that are essential for maintaining forest health and economic output in the East German regions.

Wahlers Forsttechnik’s move to expand its presence reflects an industry-wide recognition that success in contemporary forestry relies on an integrated approach: providing the best machinery alongside the best service and training. By placing the new service center in a key logistical and timber region, Wahlers and PONSSE are proactively supporting German forestry enterprises as they navigate the challenges of sustainable timber production in the 21st century.
