Finland’s largest family-owned mechanical wood-processing group, Versowood Oy, has been honoured with the distinguished National Entrepreneur Award 2025. The accolade was presented on Saturday, 25 October 2025 during the Entrepreneur Gala in Tampere.
The annual award programme recognises companies that display exemplary entrepreneurship, and this year three firms were selected. Versowood was singled out by the award-givers — Fennia, the Federation of Finnish Entrepreneurs, the Finnish Association of Work and the Foundation for Private Entrepreneurs — for its ambitious growth orientation, bold investment strategy, international success and strong sense of responsibility.
“It is great to award this award to entrepreneurs with a strong growth attitude. The companies they lead have made bold investments and focused on product development and quality. In addition, the awardees have a lot of international business. The entrepreneurs have also taken responsibility seriously.” remarked Hanna Hartikainen, CEO of Fennia and a member of the award jury.
At the gala, Versowood’s CEO, Ville Kopra, expressed his delight:
“This award is a recognition of the past. Being recognised for having done meaningful work, but above all, an encouragement for the future. It belongs to all of us at Versowood, including my father and brother. Thank you for this valuable recognition on behalf of all of us – it means more than words can express at this moment.”
Versowood enjoys a robust export presence: approximately 60 % of its sales are generated abroad, and the firm shipped to about 65 countries last year. With its main focus on sawn-timber production, the company also manufactures glulam, primary processed timber goods, wooden bridges, poles, packaging and bio-energy products.
Domestically, the firm’s impact is significant. It is estimated that 77 % of its turnover remains in Finland, thereby reinforcing economic value and supporting local communities. The scale of growth is particularly striking: the company’s annual production has grown to roughly 20 times the level of the early 1990s, and a future turnover target of one billion euros has been set.
Raw-material sourcing close to production sites and highly efficient logistics have been identified as cornerstones of the firm’s expansion and sustainability strategy. Meanwhile, its corporate values — caring, courage and leadership — are clearly embedded in everyday operations: caring for employees, customers, forest owners and stakeholders; courage to innovate and lead; and leadership by example.
Ville Kopra underlined his hands-on style of leadership: “I have been working at a sawmill since I was very young and have grown up in this world. Over the years, I have developed a pretty good grasp of things, meaning I have the numbers and facts. It is important for me to be part of a team. I try to be active all the way down to the factory-floor level and I regularly visit our 15 different units.” He added: “The national entrepreneur award is an important sign of appreciation. It shows that we have succeeded in our work as a team.”
The National Entrepreneur Award has been presented annually since 1968. More than 200 Finnish companies have already received the honour. The award shines a light on entrepreneurship’s vital role in the Finnish economy. It rewards not only the entrepreneur personally but also the company’s full workforce. Selection criteria include financial success, dynamic history, entrepreneurial drive and distinguishing features such as innovation, originality or generational change.
The award committee is composed of representatives from the Federation of Finnish Entrepreneurs, the Finnish Association of Work, the Foundation for Private Entrepreneurs and Fennia.
Founded in 1946, Versowood has become Finland’s leading privately-owned mechanical wood-processing company. The business employs nearly 900 people across 14 locations nationwide and maintains a turnover of approximately 550 million euros. The company’s annual sawn-timber production stands at about 1.4 million cubic metres.
Versowood’s production includes planed, painted and impregnated timber products, glued-wood structures and elements such as telephone and electricity poles, wooden bridges, noise barriers, packaging and bio-energy materials. In 2024, taxes and fees paid by the company totalled around 370 million euros, highlighting its contribution to regional economies.
Recent expansions include the acquisitions of Korkeakoski sawmill, Kissakoski sawmill and the Turenki pellet plant. In the previous financial year the firm invested 29 million euros to strengthen operations and growth potential.
For Versowood and the wider forest-industry ecosystem, this recognition underscores the value of strategic investment, international expansion and sustainable sourcing. It also signals to industry peers and markets that innovation, responsible raw-material management and strong export performance are key success factors.
In a global context where demand for wood-based, renewable, low-carbon materials is rising, Versowood’s model demonstrates how a Finnish-based processor can compete globally while retaining deep ties to local forest economies and communities. The firm’s growth, product diversification and export reach combine to make it a benchmark for entrepreneurial excellence within the forest sector.
As Versowood embarks on its next phase of growth — with a view to hitting the one-billion-euro turnover milestone — this award will serve as both a validation of what has been achieved and a catalyst for future ambitions.
