Schaffer Holz GmbH, a leading Austrian sawmill renowned for processing large-diameter logs, has implemented a customised waste wood processing system from Vecoplan AG. This integration aims to address the challenges of handling approximately 35% waste wood from an annual cutting volume of 150,000 solid cubic meters, within the constraints of a narrow and confined plant layout.
Challenges in Waste Wood Management
The sawmill’s location along a stream and bordered by railroad tracks posed significant spatial limitations. Accumulation of wood residues such as chips, bark, and sawdust could lead to production downtimes if not managed efficiently. Therefore, Schaffer Holz sought a reliable and sustainable solution to process these by-products without compromising on performance or space.
Vecoplan’s Customised Solution
Vecoplan AG, a specialist in machinery for processing and handling raw materials, developed a tailored system comprising conveying, shredding, and screening technologies. The system includes:
This integrated system processes up to 18 cubic meters of waste wood per hour, ensuring a continuous and clean material flow.
Economic and Operational Benefits
The implementation of Vecoplan’s system has led to several operational improvements:
Lambert Sattler, authorised signatory at Schaffer Holz, remarked, “We’re very happy that we decided to choose Vecoplan. The system runs reliably, the quality of the wood chips is good and the screens allow us to make targeted improvements.”
Schaffer Holz’s collaboration with Vecoplan AG exemplifies the integration of tailored technology solutions to enhance waste wood processing in the woodworking industry. By addressing specific operational challenges, the customised system not only improves efficiency and product quality but also supports sustainable practices within the sawmill’s operations.
