VDMA highlights Automation as the future of wood industry at LIGNA 2025 Preview

 Thursday, February 27, 2025

Markus Hüllmann, Chairman of the VDMA Woodworking Machinery Association, presented an optimistic yet pragmatic outlook for the woodworking machinery sector at the LIGNA 2025 press preview. Despite economic turbulence and global competition, European machine manufacturers are gearing up for a market rebound through automation, technical expertise, and customer-driven innovations.

“The past year was challenging, but there are strong reasons for optimism,” stated Hüllmann. “Automation and engineering excellence allow us to reduce production costs, enhance quality, and maintain a competitive edge.”

Economic Outlook for 2025

In 2024, German woodworking machine and tool manufacturers recorded a 15% decline in production. However, the industry association anticipates stabilization in 2025, expecting an increase in orders from Q3 onward. Exports dropped by 11.5% between January and November 2024, with Europe experiencing the steepest declines, while North America showed a positive trend. The association forecasts that North America and select overseas markets will contribute to growth in the coming year.

Automation and Innovation: A Competitive Advantage

Technology remains the key to success. “Automation and digitalization are no longer optional but essential,” emphasized Hüllmann. “They help manufacturers cut costs, boost efficiency, and ensure consistent quality amid growing labor shortages.” The aging workforce in many regions underscores the necessity of merging automation with technical expertise and superior service.

The wood industry also stands to benefit from sustainability trends. As climate change discussions intensify, the demand for timber as an eco-friendly building material is rising. With the push for decarbonization, timber construction is gaining momentum in Europe and beyond.

Industry Calls for Political Support

The VDMA Woodworking Machinery Association urges the German government to implement reforms ensuring the country remains a competitive investment hub. Industry leaders stress the need for a flexible labor market, streamlined immigration for skilled workers, and reduced bureaucratic barriers, particularly in timber construction regulations.

“Germany must act now to secure its leadership in the industry,” warned Hüllmann. “Delays in addressing these challenges could weaken our competitive position.”

LIGNA 2025: Showcasing Solutions for the Future

LIGNA 2025, the world’s leading trade fair for the woodworking industry, will take place in Hanover from May 26 to 30. “LIGNA will be the ultimate platform for technical solutions essential for success in today’s complex and highly competitive market,” Hüllmann remarked. “From advanced automation to smart production systems, the event will highlight how our industry is transforming challenges into opportunities.”

As the industry navigates economic uncertainties, LIGNA 2025 promises to be a critical event for innovation and growth, setting the stage for the future of woodworking technology.
