Valmet prepares to upgrade automation system at Stora Enso’s Imatra power plant

Valmet has secured an order to upgrade the existing Valmet DNA Automation System at Stora Enso’s power plant in Imatra, Finland. The plant, which plays a vital role in supporting the operations of the Imatra Mills, relies heavily on Valmet’s automation technology. Ensuring the continuous and reliable functioning of the power plant’s systems is essential to avoid production disruptions.

The order, placed in the second quarter of 2024, highlights the long-standing partnership between Valmet and Stora Enso. While the financial value of the order remains undisclosed, the upgrade will be delivered in two phases. The first phase will be completed during the annual shutdown in November 2025, with the second phase scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Mikko Marttinen, Project Manager at Stora Enso Imatra Mills, emphasized the importance of the upgrade. “By implementing a lifecycle update for the Valmet DNA Automation System, we enhance reliability and greatly minimize the risk of unplanned shutdowns,” he stated. Since the mill operates 24/7, maintaining consistent operations is critical to avoid production losses.

Valmet’s Sales Manager, Automation Systems, Arto Mäkinen, expressed confidence in the partnership and the benefits of the upgrade. “With the automation system running around the clock, it’s essential to regularly perform lifecycle updates to ensure the continued reliability of critical processes. I’m also confident that operators will welcome the improvements brought by the DNA User Interface upgrade.”
Technical Details of the Upgrade

The upgrade will modernize the power plant’s Valmet DNA Automation System in two phases across 2025 and 2026. In addition to upgrading process and operator stations, most IO cabinets will be replaced, although some adapters will be used to meet the tight schedule. The control room will receive a significant upgrade in 2026 with the installation of the new Valmet DNA User Interface. The full upgrade will cover all safety-related systems, ensuring the long-term reliability and performance of the plant’s operations.

This project underlines the importance of lifecycle management for automation systems in industrial facilities that operate continuously, where even minor disruptions can lead to significant losses.
