Sustainability is no longer a standalone initiative for global companies—it is increasingly becoming a measure of long-term competitiveness, resilience, and trust. For UPM, this commitment has once again been recognised on the global stage.
The company has been awarded the EcoVadis Platinum rating, the highest distinction granted by the leading provider of corporate sustainability assessments. Out of more than 150,000 companies evaluated worldwide, only the top one percent reach this level. UPM has consistently remained in this exclusive group since 2020, and has now achieved an outstanding score of 90/100 for the second consecutive year.
EcoVadis evaluates companies across four key pillars: Environment, Labor and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. Together, these categories offer a broad picture of how organisations manage their environmental and social responsibilities across operations and supply chains.
But UPM’s sustainability progress does not end there. In May, the company also received an A score in CDP’s 2025 Supplier Engagement Assessment (SEA), which focuses specifically on how effectively companies involve their suppliers in addressing climate change. This recognition highlights the growing importance of supply chain collaboration in driving meaningful climate action.
According to CDP, companies that actively engage suppliers in climate mitigation play a crucial role in accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy—something increasingly expected by customers, investors, and regulators alike.
At UPM, this approach is deeply integrated into its operations. As Gabriele Wende, Director, Responsibility at UPM, explains, these recognitions reflect both external expectations and internal priorities:
“These recognitions respond to our customers’ expectations and reinforce the value of high product quality, transparency and responsible performance across our operations and supply chain. Together with our global network of approximately 17,000 suppliers, we continue to build lasting partnerships based on shared principles and a commitment to sustainability.”
Behind these achievements is a structured and globally recognised assessment framework. EcoVadis is built on established international standards, including the GRI, UN Global Compact, and ISO 26000, and its methodology is overseen by an independent international scientific committee. This ensures consistency, transparency, and scientific rigor in evaluating sustainability performance across industries.
The platform itself is widely used by procurement teams around the world, helping organisations identify risks, improve transparency, and drive innovation in sustainable business practices. Its reach spans more than 230 industries across over 175 countries, making it one of the most comprehensive sustainability benchmarks globally.
For UPM, these external recognitions align closely with its broader identity as a global material solutions company. The organisation continues to renew products and value chains through its portfolio of renewable fibres, advanced materials, decarbonisation solutions, and communication papers. Its sustainability performance has also been recognised by other global benchmarks, including the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices. Today, UPM employs around 15,100 people worldwide and generates annual sales of approximately €9.7 billion.
Looking ahead, the company’s strategy remains focused on profitable and sustainable growth. By investing in performance, innovation, and a balanced business portfolio, UPM aims to unlock new opportunities across its core markets—from renewable fibres to advanced materials and decarbonisation solutions.
At the heart of this strategy is a simple but consistent idea: competitiveness and sustainability are no longer separate goals. As UPM continues to refine its operations and strengthen its global supply chain, it is positioning itself for long-term growth in a rapidly evolving market where sustainability is becoming a defining standard.
