The Pallet LOOP wins the Supplier of the Year Award, proving that circularity is no longer a pipe dream

 Thursday, December 4, 2025

A key turning point in the UK building industry’s transition to a circular economy has been reached when The Pallet LOOP won Supplier of the Year at the esteemed Builders’ Merchants News Awards 2025. This noteworthy award is a strong affirmation of the company’s innovative business strategy and represents a clear industry-wide transition away from single-use logistics and toward a more sustainable, resource-efficient future.

The Pallet LOOP’s success lies in its innovative approach to one of construction’s most persistent waste problems: the estimated 20 million wooden pallets manufactured annually for the sector, of which over 90% are currently scrapped or sent to landfill after just one use. The company’s distinctive green, reusable pallets and incentivised return scheme are designed to recover, repair, and reuse pallets multiple times, significantly reducing construction waste and carbon emissions.

Over the past 18 months, The Pallet LOOP, supported operationally by leading UK pallet manufacturer Scott Pallets (part of BSW Group), has intensified its collaboration across the construction supply chain. This effort has focused on convincing manufacturers, merchants, principal contractors, and housebuilders that the traditional linear ‘take, make, use, throw’ model for pallets is no longer economically or environmentally viable.

The company’s Managing Director, Andy Williamson, who brings extensive leadership experience from major organisations like SIG PLC and IKO Group, acknowledged the collective effort behind the award.

“We are incredibly proud to be named Supplier of the Year. This award reflects the hard work of our team, the support of everyone at Scott Pallets, and the commitment of our manufacturing partners,” said Williamson. “Their backing has been vital in helping us drive real change. With manufacturers and merchants working together to return pallets and reduce waste, we can cut carbon and build a more sustainable future for our industry.”

The success of the scheme is inextricably linked to the early adoption by key material manufacturers whose commitment to circularity provided the necessary momentum. The Pallet LOOP paid tribute to partners including British Gypsum, Isover UK, Superglass Insulation by Etex, Wienerberger UK, and CEMEX UK. These industry giants are now using the distinctive green, reusable pallets to transport high-volume products such as plasterboard, insulation, bricks, and cement, fundamentally changing how their materials arrive on-site.

The core of The Pallet LOOP’s appeal is its design for both sustainability and financial efficiency.

  1. Enhanced pallet design: Unlike conventional white pallets, LOOP pallets are engineered to be stronger and safer, built from sustainably sourced timber and designed to withstand the rigours of multiple trips. They are also RFID-tagged, providing an industry-first smart tracking system for better supply chain management and data on environmental impact.
  2. Financial incentive: The scheme operates on a PayBack model. Manufacturers pay a deposit on the green pallets. When the pallets reach the merchant yard or construction site and are no longer needed, registered customers—typically merchants, principal contractors, and housebuilders—can book a collection. For every green pallet successfully returned to a LOOP depot for refurbishment and reuse, the returner receives a PayBack of up to £4.
  3. Waste reduction: This incentivised system is designed to replace costly skip disposal. The company estimates that the scheme can save end-users up to £12 per pallet (up to £4 PayBack plus around £8 saving on skip disposal fees). Furthermore, the efficient collection service helps construction sites reduce their overall waste volume by up to 10%, supporting their own stringent net-zero and zero-waste goals.

The impact of this circular model extends far beyond cost savings. Industry data highlights that widespread adoption of the reusable pallet system has the potential to:

The fact that the award came from the Builders’ Merchants News, a publication central to the distribution and trade sector, underscores that the builders’ merchants are key actors in closing the pallet waste loop. They are positioned as the critical collection point for both new and reclaimed building sites, facilitating the essential reverse logistics that make the scheme scalable nationwide across England, Wales, and Scotland.

The Pallet LOOP’s recognition as Supplier of the Year validates the founders’ core belief that the construction logistics sector is ready for transformative, collaborative change. The early and widespread commitment from market leaders—from raw material producers to distributors and major housebuilders like Barratt Redrow—demonstrates that sustainability is no longer a peripheral concern but a core commercial driver.

Moving forward, the focus for The Pallet LOOP is on scaling operations, deepening penetration across the UK and Ireland (where it has partnered with CJ Sheeran), and maximizing the number of green pallets recovered and put back into circulation. This award signals that the construction industry is finally embracing a greener, leaner, and smarter way to move its materials, transforming the humble wooden pallet from a disposable item into a valuable, reusable asset.
