TDUK-Wood Campus course

The integrity of the supply chain is under more scrutiny than ever as the UK construction industry speeds up its shift to a net-zero future. In response to this challenge, Timber Development UK (TDUK) has formally introduced “Sourcing Timber Responsibly,” an innovative online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course.

Hosted via Wood Campus, this initiative is designed to empower architects, contractors, merchants, and importers with the technical expertise required to navigate the complexities of global timber procurement. By providing a clear framework for environmental and legal compliance, the course aims to ensure that timber remains the world’s most trusted sustainable building material.

While timber is celebrated for its carbon-sequestering properties, its environmental benefits are only realized when the material is harvested and traded ethically. Deforestation and illegal logging remain significant global risks that can undermine the sustainability claims of any construction project.

In the UK, stringent regulations such as the UK Timber Regulation (UKTR) and the Building Safety Act’s emphasis on “the golden thread” of information demand a high level of competency from everyone in the built environment. TDUK’s new course addresses this need by transforming complex legal requirements into accessible, practical knowledge.

“Responsible sourcing is at the heart of sustainable construction,” says Xiao Ma, Sustainability Manager at TDUK. “It is vital that everyone who works in the sector feels confident and competent in sourcing and specifying timber. By improving knowledge across every profession—from supplier to specifier—we are creating a far more resilient supply chain.”

Six modules to master the supply chain

The ‘Sourcing Timber Responsibly’ course is structured into six concise, high-impact modules that can be completed in the duration of a lunch break. The curriculum covers the essential “pillars” of the modern timber trade:

  1. Legality and sustainability fundamentals: Understanding the distinction between “legal” and “sustainable” wood and why both are non-negotiable.
  2. Combating deforestation and illegal logging: Identifying high-risk regions and understanding the global impact of the timber trade.
  3. Certification and chain of custody: Navigating the nuances of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).
  4. Due diligence and risk assessment: How to perform the necessary checks to ensure timber placed on the UK market meets rigorous standards.
  5. UK regulations and government policy: A deep dive into the legal requirements for procurement in the UK market.
  6. Effective specification: Practical tips for architects and contractors on how to write procurement policies that guarantee sustainable outcomes.

This new CPD is not an isolated project; it is a core component of TDUK’s Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP) System. The RPP is a mandatory framework for TDUK members, requiring them to declare their timber sources and prove their commitment to ethical trade.

The ‘Sourcing Timber Responsibly’ module has also been integrated into the Essentials of Timber Supply Level Two, TDUK’s flagship educational programme. This integration ensures that the next generation of timber professionals enters the workforce with a “sustainability-first” mindset.

For specifiers and builders, the stakes are high. Incorrectly specified timber can lead to project delays, legal liabilities, and significant reputational damage. By completing this assessment-backed course, professionals gain:

The course is currently available free of charge to all TDUK members via the Wood Campus platform. Its digital-first delivery allows professionals to learn at their own pace, ensuring that vital sustainability education is accessible regardless of location—whether on a construction site in Manchester or an architectural firm in London.

As timber’s role in the low-carbon built environment continues to expand, TDUK’s latest educational push ensures that the industry’s growth is built on a foundation of integrity, transparency, and expert knowledge.
