TALO-appointment

TALO, the advanced timber superstructure specialist committed to delivering ultra-low energy homes across the UK, has announced a major strategic appointment, naming Ant Allen CEng MIStructE as its new Technical Director. The appointment signifies a profound commitment by TALO to elevate technical rigour and client support as the firm rapidly scales its operations in the UK’s burgeoning Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) sector. Allen brings a unique and highly relevant skillset to the leadership team, forged over a distinguished 40-year career spanning structural engineering, major residential development, and, critically, structural warranty certification.

Allen’s most recent and impactful role was at ICW Group, the United Kingdom’s third-largest structural warranty provider. There, he held a pivotal position leading the development of ICW’s rigorous MMC accreditation process. This experience involved managing teams of expert warranty surveyors and working closely with underwriters to certify advanced residential and commercial systems, including large-scale housing projects of over 300 units.

His deep-seated knowledge of the exacting standards required for insurance-backed structural warranties—a non-negotiable requirement for mainstream mortgage lenders—provides TALO with invaluable internal technical authority. As a chartered structural engineer and a member of the Engineering Council and Institution of Structural Engineers for more than three decades, Allen’s background is rooted in robust technical governance.

“I have worked with many MMC systems over the years and visited the TALO offsite manufacturing centre as part of their ICW accreditation process,” said Ant Allen. “This is the best closed-panel solution I have seen for low-rise housing. TALO has a trailblazing approach that combines superior quality, thermal efficiency, and consistency of manufacture from start to finish. The management team has a refreshing, open-minded approach and an impressive drive to raise standards for low-rise housing through innovation.”

At TALO, Allen will assume technical leadership across commercial operations, focusing on providing seamless, expert support to developer clients and their design teams from the initial project feasibility stage right through to completion.

His mandate is to ensure every housebuilding project leverages the full benefit of TALO’s integrated, engineered solution. This includes the firm’s off-site-manufactured timber superstructures, which are based on proven Nordic technology and a completely dry process, as well as its recently accredited, innovative foundation system.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for the UK housing market, where the push for both sustainability and build-to-rent efficiency has accelerated the adoption of MMC. Allen’s expertise in forensic interrogation for major building insurers, alongside his comprehensive background in new-build, refurbishment, and commercial developments, equips him to proactively mitigate technical and commercial risks for TALO’s clients.

TALO’s core proposition centres on delivering homes that not only meet but significantly exceed increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, such as the UK Government’s ambitious Future Homes Standard. The news of Allen joining highlights the company’s ability to deliver high-performance housing solutions that are also commercially viable.

Allen specifically praised the system’s performance metrics and unique product offering. “TALO’s system exceeds Passivhaus energy standards as standard, and their package now includes an ICW-accredited foundation system—a complete solution for clients that brings significant cost and time savings, particularly for brownfield sites,” he explained.

For developers grappling with the complexities and costs associated with challenging land and brownfield sites, the integrated, lightweight, and ICW-accredited foundation solution offers a major advantage. Combined with the swift, weather-independent assembly of the closed-panel timber superstructure—which can achieve watertight status in a matter of days—the system dramatically shortens build times and provides greater cost certainty.

The ultimate goal for TALO, supported by Allen’s technical leadership, is to accelerate the delivery of ultra-low energy homes across all housing tenures, from affordable social housing to high-end market sales. By bringing his two decades of offsite specialism to the role, Allen is poised to influence the strategic direction of product development and market positioning.

“This is an outstanding advanced timber superstructure system, and I am looking forward to helping TALO to scale its impact and bring these innovations to even more housebuilding clients,” Allen concluded.

His presence not only strengthens the company’s internal engineering capability but also acts as an external mark of quality assurance, signalling to the wider construction, lending, and insurance sectors that TALO’s solutions meet the highest standards of technical excellence and de-risking. The strategic alignment of a structural warranty expert with a pioneering MMC manufacturer is a significant development, reflecting a maturing UK offsite sector that is increasingly focused on bankability, insurability, and performance longevity.

TALO is now strategically positioned to leverage Allen’s deep industry knowledge, not just to refine its already accredited systems, but to collaborate with housebuilders and developers on the next generation of truly sustainable, energy-efficient UK homes.
