Recently, FederlegnoArredo’s recent Wood Building Report offers a detailed overview of the trend of the wood (green) building sector in Italy, confirming the country as Europe’s third largest producer after Germany and Sweden.

FederlegnoArredo’s latest report, the eighth to be precise, shows a significant increase in the construction of wood housing units in Italy in 2022, with a total of 3602 new units. This positive result represents an increase of one percentage point over the previous year. This figure further consolidates Italy’s position as Europe’s third largest producer of green building, ahead of Austria, which has a long tradition in wood construction. The total turnover for the entire industry increased 15.8 % over 2021 to 2.3 billion euros.
Another fact that emerges from the report is the geography of companies engaged in green building. The greatest concentration is in Lombardy where 73 companies operate, while Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto together account for 50 percent of the total. In particular, Trentino-Alto Adige boasts the largest and most specialised companies in the sector, so much so that 19 % of total green building production is made in this region alone, followed by Lombardy at 16%, Piedmont at 6% and Veneto at 5%.

Wood construction fits into the context of green building, or architecture designed to reduce its impact on the environment. Compared to traditional construction, it offers a number of advantages due to the raw material it employs. These include the greater energy efficiency of wood buildings, which can reduce heating costs in winter or air conditioning in summer by up to 40-50% compared to concrete structures. This is possible because of the superior insulating capacity of wood, which retains heat inside the home in colder seasons and keeps it outside in warmer ones.
