Stora Enso’s Ybbs mill in Austria has reached a remarkable production milestone, delivering one million cubic meters of cross-laminated timber (CLT) to clients worldwide. This achievement underscores the mill’s position as a key supplier of prefabricated mass timber elements for both residential and commercial construction.
The Ybbs facility, operational since 1983, began producing CLT in 2012. Over the years, it has evolved into a strategic site for engineered wood, serving complex construction projects across Europe, Asia, and Australia. The milestone highlights decades of collaboration with customers and partners, alongside growing global demand for low-carbon building solutions.
Werner Hatteier, Mill Director at Ybbs, emphasised the importance of the achievement. He noted that it reflects the strong partnerships cultivated with clients over time. “Reaching one million cubic meters is a key accomplishment for the Ybbs mill,” he said.
Ybbs CLT has been utilised in diverse construction projects, ranging from public buildings to private developments. In Northern Europe, materials from the mill have been deployed as far north as Svalbard, Norway, where construction must withstand extreme climatic conditions. Across Western Europe, projects in France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom have demanded precision, efficiency, and rigorous coordination.
Beyond Europe, Ybbs has extended its reach to Asia and Australia. Notable projects include Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University Academic Building South (NTU ABS), one of Asia’s largest mass timber structures. In Australia, the Atlassian headquarters in Sydney integrates Ybbs CLT in a flagship hybrid-timber design, combining engineering performance with architectural ambition.
Prefabricated mass timber offers multiple advantages, including rapid on-site assembly and precise construction. Elements are manufactured under controlled factory conditions using advanced CNC technology. This approach ensures consistency, reduces on-site complexity, and supports timely project delivery.
Additional benefits include hydrophobic and UV-protected coatings applied to CLT panels. These treatments stabilise moisture content and protect elements from weather exposure during construction. Clients gain structural reliability alongside solutions tailored to project requirements.
Silke Zoryk, Head of Customer Service, Marketing & Communications at Stora Enso, stated that customers depend on both high-quality products and technical expertise. Reliable delivery and comprehensive support remain central to Ybbs’ service model, reinforcing its reputation in the global timber construction market.
The milestone also reflects the construction industry’s ongoing shift toward sustainable materials. CLT, as a precision-engineered, low-carbon alternative, allows lighter structures, efficient prefabrication, and reduced environmental impact compared to traditional building methods.
Stora Enso continues to advance the use of renewable materials. Its focus on innovative timber solutions supports the global transition to sustainable construction practices. Ybbs mill remains committed to maintaining consistent quality and technical excellence as market demand for high-performance, eco-friendly building materials grows.
This achievement positions Ybbs at the forefront of renewable material solutions, supporting a broad spectrum of construction needs. From Europe to Asia and Oceania, the mill demonstrates the scalability and reliability of prefabricated mass timber.
Stora Enso, a global leader in renewable solutions, actively works to replace non-renewable materials across industries. Its mission aligns with creating a circular bioeconomy, leveraging fresh and recycled fibres to produce competitive, high-quality materials. The Ybbs milestone reinforces this vision, illustrating the company’s commitment to both innovation and sustainability.
As demand for low-carbon, high-precision timber construction increases, Ybbs is poised to meet global expectations. The facility’s expertise, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and customer-focused solutions continue to drive the adoption of mass timber in modern construction.
