Statement from Confor on Brexit

 Friday, June 24, 2016

conforThe British public has made its decision to leave the European Union and it is vital that UK forestry and wood-using businesses are supported in understanding what Brexit will mean for them and assisted in navigating their way through the inevitable changes that will take place in the coming years.

Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor: promoting forestry and wood, which represents 1500 forestry and wood-using businesses across the UK, said: “Throughout the referendum campaign, Confor presented factual information to its members in a straightforward way. Now that the result is known and the British people have voted to leave the EU, there are many questions that will need answered. Confor will work to provide those answers.”

There are significant areas where the EU has had a major impact on the forestry and timber sector, which Confor highlighted in its report published in April, including grants, regulation, plant health and standards for trading timber. Confor will now look very carefully at each of those areas and produce a report for members to identify what is likely to happen next – and when.

Mr Goodall added: “Significant change can create significant uncertainty for businesses and we will do what we can to help the sector identify where change will come and help members navigate their way through any changes”.
