STARK Group pioneered a recycling idea of ‘Rewood’, that supports reused products and circular business models in Finland. Finland is the third market where GENTRÆ is launched. Leftover or surplus wood and plywood from building sites are given as a circular substitute for new wood as part of the concept’s initial test experiment. STARK Suomi investigates and analyses the viability of reusing wood from building sites as part of the promising pilot project, assisting in the reduction of the quantity of wood waste produced on the construction site.

Rewood Highlights :

As a circular substitute for new wood, the REWOOD project collects wood from building sites, cleans it, and sells it. In this way, the wood is put into a cycle where it is reused repeatedly as long as the quality is optimal. The project encourages the use of circular solutions in the building industry, which produces a lot of wood waste.

CEO of STARK Suomi Harri Päiväniemi analyses, “Through the project, we are investigating the possibility of developing a permanent sales concept for recyclable wood. Currently, recycling building materials is not possible on a large scale. Together with the construction company, SRV, and service company, L&T, we want to be pioneers in circular solutions. The pilot is an excellent example of how different players in the value chain work together to support a more sustainable development in the construction industry.”

Way forward for a circular economy

Nearly half of the garbage produced worldwide is produced by the building industry. In Finland, the real estate and construction industries are the second greatest producers of waste. Tonnes of wood are used as fuel every year, and as wood is the most popular product category in the Group’s Finnish business unit, STARK Suomi envisions that REWOOD can promote the use of recycled materials in the building sector as well as contribute to the sustainable use of the forest’s resources, thus promoting a healthier, circular economy.

The ingenious idea was introduced in Sweden in 2021 and Denmark in 2018. Since 2019, the idea in Denmark has gathered and recycled more than 500 tonnes of wood in partnership with construction firms and suppliers, resulting in at least a 22.5-tonne CO2 reduction.
