Brage Preschool, located in Hyllie outside Malmö, is being constructed with a strong focus on sustainability, thanks to its use of sustainable materials and climate-conscious design choices. The preschool’s frame is built using cross-laminated timber (CLT), provided by Södra in collaboration with contractor NCC. This decision to use wood as the primary material has resulted in a 40% reduction in the building’s climate impact compared to typical construction methods.
The client, Malmö Stadsfastigheter, has led the construction of Brage Preschool as a pilot project for climate-efficient building. This project is part of the city’s efforts to advance sustainable construction practices, and it has gained attention for its reduction in CO2 emissions. Climate calculations from the project show that the CO2 emissions per square metre of Brage Preschool are just 159 kg CO2e/BTA, a significant drop from the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning’s average of 258 kg CO2e/BTA for preschool buildings.

Södra plays a vital role in the low climate impact of the Brage Preschool project. The CLT used in the construction is produced at Södra’s facility in Värö, near Varberg. The facility combines the pulp mill and sawmill, ensuring that every part of the tree is utilised effectively.
