Secto Design is making innovative use of Koskisen’s thin plywood to create its popular lamps, skilfully handcrafted from Finnish birch. Their natural wooden surface makes the light they cast warm and inviting. Architect Seppo Koho, the designer of the lamps, has created a softly filtering light which invites rather than blinds.

Finnish birch enlivens lamp
Birch was initially chosen because of its pale colour, according to Tuula Jusélius. Additionally, Secto Design places a strong and distinct emphasis on its Finnishness; the business strives to be as Finnish as it can be. People install the lamps in prominent spots throughout their homes, making any mistakes easy to spot. Secto Design’s lamps are made only from premium, faultless thin plywood. Secto Design has received quality and service from Koskisen that meet the needs and standards of the business. There could be no discernible knots in the veneer. Lumber free of knots must make up the entirety of each slat.

“If we used a darker wood, it wouldn’t reflect the light in the same way. We also have our own tradition and knowledge, so we dare to use birch. What’s more, we knew how applicable birch was even for more challenging bent wood projects. They work with birch, but we couldn’t be sure with other types of wood,” Jusélius says.

Unique lamp customised to users’ wishes
Secto Design, which predominantly produces furniture from laminated veneer lumber, was looking to hire a designer in 1995. Tuula Jusélius was in charge of the recruitment. Seppo Koho, who was hired by the company, shared Jusélius’ enthusiasm for Nordic wood, minimalist design, and skilled woodworking. When clients expressed a desire for a wooden lamp that the market was unable to provide, Koho developed the Secto pendant lamp. The cornerstone of the product line is still this pendant lamp. Secto Design lamps highlight the appearance of the area and place, lending them a special mood and closeness.

Koskisen and the company have been conducting business together for almost 15 years. Koskisen provides Secto Design with materials, including veneers and thin plywood for the manufacturers of the component slats.
