SCM, a global leader in woodworking technologies, has taken a significant step towards earning the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award in 2026 with its “Blade Off” safety system for circular saws. Recently selected for the ADI Design Index 2024 by ADI – Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (Industrial Design Association), the system has gained notable attention for its innovative approach to operator safety. Designed in collaboration with Design Group Italia, “Blade Off” aims to redefine safety standards across woodworking, enhancing the efficiency and ergonomics of circular saw operations.
The ADI Design Index 2024, showcased at the ADI Design Museum in Milan from October 30, features over 200 products from a pool of more than a thousand submissions, representing a cross-section of the latest in contemporary design. This year’s selection highlights the diverse landscape of Italian industrial design, covering sectors from woodworking and furnishings to social design, exhibition displays, and transport. As a part of this distinguished lineup, SCM’s “Blade Off” exemplifies Italian ingenuity in industrial design, addressing the critical need for advanced safety features in woodworking.
“Blade Off” is engineered to significantly minimise risk by preventing accidental contact between the operator and the saw blade. The system utilizes sensors that detect any part of the human body within a hazardous zone, triggering a rapid response that retracts the blade beneath the work surface within milliseconds. This breakthrough mechanism aligns safety with the user’s workflow, ensuring that safety measures do not disrupt the operator’s control and precision during machining tasks.
This safety innovation reflects SCM’s dedication to promoting safer work environments without sacrificing productivity or ergonomics. The “Blade Off” system not only modernizes circular saw technology but also aims to elevate traditional woodworking practices, making them safer and more appealing to the next generation of artisans. This commitment to enhancing safety and efficiency is what earned SCM its place in the ADI Design Index 2024, establishing it as a strong contender for the Compasso d’Oro in 2026.
With “Blade Off” SCM sets a new benchmark in industrial design for woodworking, offering a cutting-edge solution that merges functionality with safety and ergonomic integrity.
