Sundsvall’s SCA Logistics terminal has invested in a brand-new Mantsinen 200 knuckle boom crane. This presents an opportunity to provide even greater service. “We already have a crane of the same model, and now that we have two, we can load larger ships more efficiently,” confirms Tommy Berglund, Head of Operations at the terminal. Purchasing a second crane offers several benefits. First and foremost, there is an improvement in both capacity and flexibility.

“The time ships spend at the quay for loading or unloading will be significantly shorter when we can use two large cranes simultaneously. We also have the opportunity to receive two larger ships at the same time and use one crane for each. Previously, the second ship had to wait for the first to be serviced,” states Tommy.

Enhanced safety

The working environment and safety are also enhanced with the new crane. A safety mechanism that makes sure there is no chance of tools, like a beam, hitting the cabin is one of the crane’s features. Additionally, the crane alerts the operator of large loads so that they can work safely and effectively. Other new features include the ability to control tool settings from a computer in the operator’s cabin. “Different tools require different pressures on the hydraulic oil, and on older cranes, manual adjustments of the reduction valves on the unit are needed. Now, this can be managed with a few keystrokes on the computer. The working environment in the cabin is also generally better,” states Jonny Strömståhl, Department manager for storage and planning.

Better maintenance

Another benefit of the investment is that it will be simpler to schedule the cranes’ maintenance. “Now we can have one crane in service and still load and unload larger ships. This means it will be easier to keep the service schedule, which is important for the equipment to last as long as possible,” affirms Jonny.

More units that hang freely

Six units of pulp bales, totaling 12 tons, may be lifted by the crane unit, which is of the Stevenel brand. The weight of the unit itself is roughly four tons. “It is a new type of pulp unit that is more free-hanging, and we therefore expect it to handle bumps well,” notes Jonny.

Future-ready

SCA has invested close to 460 million SEK at the Sundsvall terminal in recent years. A new container port and other cargo handling facilities are part of the investment. “The new crane is yet another step to increase our productivity and service level. We are well prepared to handle the increased cargo volumes in our region,” concludes Jonny. A ship from Rauma, Finland, delivered the new crane, a Mantsinen 200. After traveling across the Gulf of Bothnia for half a day, it finally touched down.
