REHAU launches skill training programme for ITI Graduates in Woodworking under PMKVY

REHAU, a global leader in polymer-based solutions, has introduced a monthly skill training programme designed for ITI graduates in the woodworking industry. This initiative, carried out under the Government of India’s Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), aims to address the growing need for skilled professionals in India’s expanding woodworking sector. By providing hands-on training in woodworking, panel processing, CNC operations, and sustainable practices, REHAU is fostering the development of a workforce ready to meet both domestic and international market demands.

India’s woodworking and furniture market is experiencing rapid growth. Projections suggest that the sector will increase from ₹1.42 lakh crore in 2025 to ₹2.17 lakh crore by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost 9%. Similarly, the wood-based panel market is forecasted to grow from ₹13,900 crore in 2024 to ₹32,600 crore by 2030. The plywood segment alone is expected to rise from ₹23,500 crore in FY 2024-25 to ₹38,800 crore by FY 2033-34. Despite this significant demand, the industry is facing a critical shortage of trained workers who can operate advanced machinery, adopt modern manufacturing methods, and meet global quality standards.

Training to Address the Skill Gap

REHAU’s skill training programme is specifically designed to bridge this gap by offering training that goes beyond theoretical knowledge. The programme provides ITI graduates with hands-on experience in woodworking techniques, panel processing, CNC operations, and sustainable material practices. The initiative also ensures that participants receive certification aligned with National Occupational Standards under PMKVY, formalising their skills within the industry. In addition to technical training, the programme focuses on soft skills development and mentorship from industry experts, enhancing participants’ employability and readiness for the workforce.

Since its launch in 2015, PMKVY has trained over 1.6 crore youth across India. However, government data indicates that less than 15% of those trained have found employment, underscoring the need for more practical, sector-specific training. REHAU’s monthly training initiative aims to connect young professionals with viable job opportunities by equipping them with industry-relevant skills that are directly applicable in the workplace. This will help to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the requirements of the woodworking industry.

Supporting India’s Woodworking Sector and Enhancing Employability

The programme not only benefits the individual participants but also serves the wider woodworking industry by addressing the demand for skilled workers. As India’s woodworking market grows both domestically and in export markets, the need for skilled professionals who can handle complex machinery and meet international standards becomes increasingly critical. By training young professionals, REHAU helps reduce the reliance on external consultants, thereby enhancing productivity and competitiveness among Indian manufacturers.

Additionally, the training places a significant emphasis on sustainability, equipping workers with knowledge of eco-friendly practices that align with global environmental norms. As the world moves towards greener manufacturing processes, preparing workers for sustainable practices ensures that the Indian woodworking industry can maintain its competitiveness while being environmentally responsible.

REHAU’s Commitment to Skill Development and Industry Growth

Tushar Verma, Executive Vice President of REHAU India and Subcon, stated, “At REHAU, we believe that growth in India’s woodworking industry depends not only on infrastructure and market demand but equally on skilled hands and strong technical foundations. By offering monthly, industry-aligned training under PMKVY to ITI graduates, we aim to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. This initiative does not just benefit individual youth; it builds capacity across the sector, enhances quality and sustainability, and helps India fulfil its vision of becoming a global hub for wood processing and furniture manufacturing.”

REHAU’s initiative aligns with the Government of India’s mission to empower youth through vocational training and skill development. By providing focused, practical training, the company is contributing to the country’s efforts to create a skilled workforce that can support industry growth while ensuring long-term economic development.
