In an era where the wood processing industry faces both the opportunity of the green economy and the challenge of a persistent skilled labour gap, the Pfeifer plant at the Uelzen harbour is charting a decisive course. The facility is not just maintaining its operations but is strategically enhancing its role as a regional economic pillar through twin commitments: continuous modernisation for sustainability and aggressive talent acquisition initiatives. This dual focus is crucial. Recent reports confirm that while Germany’s dual vocational training system is world-renowned, many sectors—including skilled trades and technical professions vital to the wood industry—continue to struggle with filling apprenticeship vacancies. By proactively addressing this, the Uelzen plant is directly investing in its long-term stability and reinforcing its position as a highly attractive local employer.
The commitment to training future professionals is deeply rooted in the company’s philosophy. This dedication was highlighted on August 1st, when seven new apprentices began their careers at the Uelzen location. This latest intake joins the 13 apprentices currently undergoing rigorous vocational training, ensuring a robust pipeline of talent in key operational and commercial roles.
The chosen apprenticeships reflect the highly technical demands of a modern wood processing operation:
Christin Weding, the Administrative Director, emphasised the strategic value of this investment. “These young talents are the skilled professionals of tomorrow,” Weding remarked. “We are delighted to accompany and support them on their journey.” Beyond the established apprenticeship programmes, the company also actively engages with higher education, offering student internships and opportunities for bachelor’s theses, connecting academic research with practical industrial challenges in areas like sustainable production and resource efficiency.

Proactive talent acquisition
To counter the stiff competition for young workers, the Pfeifer team has adopted an energetic and direct outreach strategy at regional career and public events. This approach ensures the wood industry’s appeal—which centres on sustainability, technology, and stability—reaches students directly.
In June, the team made a successful appearance at the Vocation Lüneburger Heide event. The format allowed for approximately 60 pre-booked, one-on-one meetings with students, providing personalised career guidance. The effectiveness of this focused dialogue was demonstrated by immediate results: the team received four internship applications and an early application for the 2026 Industrial Mechanic program on the spot.
This was quickly followed by a three-day presence at the Open R Festival in Uelzen at the end of June 2025. This move showcased the company in a non-traditional environment, utilising the creative skills of the existing apprentices. The booth featured projects entirely conceived and constructed by the trainees, including a robust pallet counter, creative seating, and interactive displays like the ‘Hot Wire’ challenge and a nail-chopping block. This impressive exhibit provided visitors with a clear, tangible demonstration of the craftsmanship, teamwork, and expertise developed through the vocational training programme.
The outreach efforts continued into September, beginning with the company’s third participation in the training fair at Verdo-Hitzacker. The event drew approximately 450 students from the Lüchow-Dannenberg district, all eager to explore local career prospects.
“There was great interest in our offerings. Our trainers and trainees had many interesting discussions and were able to vividly explain the career opportunities at Pfeifer,” Weding reported, underscoring the value of using current apprentices as authentic ambassadors for the program.
Later in September, the company participated for the first time in the Federal Employment Agency’s job fair. This event served a dual purpose: attracting new apprentices and recruiting experienced, skilled workers for specialised positions. The response was encouraging, with CVs and short applications accepted directly on-site. The successful engagement was largely attributed to the enthusiasm of the trainees and trainers.
“A big thank you goes to our trainees, who presented themselves excellently and actively supported us, as well as to our trainers, who promoted our professions with great commitment,” Weding concluded, highlighting the pivotal role that the current workforce plays in recruiting the next.
By intertwining strategic investment in sustainable, modern wood processing infrastructure with a highly effective, community-engaged talent strategy, the Pfeifer Uelzen plant is doing more than just manufacturing wood products; it is securing a future for high-skill, high-tech manufacturing in the Niedersachsen region.
