Peab and Södra had an extensive conversation in 2024 on how the sector may quicken its transition to sustainability. To fulfill the most demanding climatic standards, the parties are now moving forward with their shared goal of creating a hybrid solution of the future for frames that combines cross-laminated timber (CLT) and precast concrete.

The partnership is predicated on a shared understanding that the material selection must be sustainable, functional, and material-neutral—that is, the appropriate material in the right location. In terms of cost and climate impact, the approach will facilitate the building of long-term sustainable housing and aid in achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

“The aim of our collaboration is to explore how we can develop a hybrid frame solution that is viable on a large scale in terms of cost, function and sustainability,” elucidated Andreas Berge, Business Area President at Södra with responsibility for Södra Building Systems. He further added, “It’s about total optimisation by using the right materials in the right place.” Peab’s focus is also on the collaboration-based solutions.“By combining wood’s low carbon footprint and lightweight constructions with the robustness, stability and weight of concrete, we will achieve the best of both worlds,” Carl Rülcker is optimistic, Interim President of the Peab company Byggelement. He went on, “We see great potential in a solution that is not based on either/or, but on collaboration. With this initiative, we are taking another step forward towards building more sustainably – without compromising on function, cost or buildability.”

The exclusive partnership aims to provide a standardised ECO hybrid frame system appropriate for the manufacturing of industrial housing. The parties will convene in the spring of 2025 to examine the prerequisites for proceeding with the development process.

About Peab and Byggelement

Peab, the Nordic Community Builder, employs 13,000 people and generates SEK 59 billion in revenue annually. They create, lay the foundation, and construct daily life where it is lived by having a local presence and concentrating on their own resources. The company’s main office is in Förslöv, which is situated in southern Sweden on the Bjäre Peninsula.

The Peab Group established Byggelement in 2003, and it continues to be one of Sweden’s top providers of whole structural systems in precast concrete components. The business manufactures and ships project-specific frames and components straight to the building site so they may be assembled.

About Södra and Building systems

Södra began operations in 1938 with the belief that their combined strength is stronger. With almost 50,000 family forest owners as members, Södra is currently the biggest forest-owner association in Sweden. Södra’s members collectively hold a world-class industrial facility that transforms forest raw materials into renewable goods like biochemicals, building systems, pulp, and timber. Their forest business employs over 3,200 people, and Södra made SEK 29 billion in sales in 2024.

Since 2019, Södra, which specialises in building systems, has started manufacturing CLT for use in major construction projects. Co-located with Södra’s sawmills and pulp mills, the manufacturing outside Varberg has access to completed infrastructure and green energy. Additionally, the company makes it possible to make intelligent use of a greater portion of the value chain and utilise the entire tree, as well as favourable conditions for effective logistics.
