Metsa Group and VR, together, are embarking on a project to boost their collaboration on sustainable logistics. Both companies have a significant social impact and thus, play a undeniably crucial role in improving environmental impacts. In light of this, they have settled on a new shared objective to cut emissions connected to transportation in half by 2030. The Metsä Group also plans to convert part of its present road transports to rail. For Metsä Group, the changes would result in an annual emission reduction of almost 14,000 tCO2e, or more than 25,000 typical lorry trips.

Metsa Group’s 2030 strategic sustainability goals

A collaborative working group between Metsa Group and VR has been established to identify specific strategies for meeting the emissions reduction goals. The initiatives include electrifying the rail system, developing more effective train designs, and using diesel fuel generated from renewable raw materials. The reduction of fossil emissions from operations and the use of fossil-based materials is one of the Metsä Group’s 2030 strategic sustainability goals. At the mill level, they have already made significant progress toward this aim, and they would like to see a similar progression in their supply chain. According to Jari Voutilainen, SVP, Sourcing and Logistics from Metsä Group, VR is a crucial partner for Metsä Group in the logistics of both raw and finished wood products, and the two companies want to significantly enhance their environmental performance together.

VR carries 2.1 million tonnes of additional goods from the forest industry, including pulp and paperboard, in addition to the 5 million cubic metres of wood and mechanical wood produced by the Metsä Group each year. Transport volumes will rise as a result of continued investments made by Metsa Group.

“Sustainability is a key part of the strategy of both VR and Metsä Group. Together, we reduce emissions from transport and accelerate the transition to a carbon neutral Finland. In principle, rail transport is the most energy-efficient mode of transport with the lowest emissions, and it plays a critical role in mitigating climate change. As a strong partner to industry, we are helping our customers achieve their environmental goals,” says Eljas Koistinen, Senior Vice President, VR Transpoint.
