Metsa Fibre, a subsidiary of the Metsa Group, officially opened its new, state-of-the-art technology Rauma pine sawmill on Monday, October 10, 2022. With President and CEO of the Metsa Group, Ilkka Hamala and Jussi Linnaranta, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Metsaliitto Cooperative, Prime Minister Sanna Marin formally inaugurated the sawmill.
Anticipated to create employment and lead in technology
The Rauma pine sawmill, valued at EUR 260 million, represents Finland’s largest-ever sawmill investment. The decision to invest was made in light of the rising demand for premium sawn timber that is produced sustainably around the world. Metsa Fibre’s Rauma sawmill’s construction got underway in the spring of 2020, and it started producing consistently on September 30, 2022. The new sawmill employs approximately 1.5 million cubic metres of Finnish-sourced pine logs per year and has an annual production capacity of 750,000 cubic metres of sawn pine timber. By the end of 2023, the sawmill will be operating at maximum capacity. This net investment by Metsa Fibre is expected to lead the globe in both efficiency and technology. Around 100 people will be employed directly by it, and 500 people will be employed throughout its direct value chain. The sawmill and pulp mill at Metsä Fibre’s Rauma location work together to provide an effective integrated mill with synergies in energy generation, side stream utilisation, logistics, and services.
“The carbon that trees bind while growing is stored in wood products and buildings made of sawn timber throughout their life cycle. The newly inaugurated Rauma sawmill will help Metsa Group boost its production of products that store carbon in the long term very resource efficiently and provide its customers with even better support for sustainable growth and the phasing out of fossil-based raw materials,” says Ilkka Hamala, President and CEO of Metsa Group.
