Metsä Fibre, part of the Metsä Group, has concluded change negotiations regarding potential temporary layoffs at its Lappeenranta and Vilppula sawmills. These discussions encompassed the entire workforce at both sites, affecting approximately 70 employees in Lappeenranta and 100 in Vilppula.
Following the negotiations, Metsä Fibre has decided to implement temporary layoffs for production personnel at the two sawmills. This decision is driven by current market conditions. The temporary layoffs will be implemented as needed between September 2024 and January 2025. The specifics regarding the allocation, numbers, and timing of the layoffs will be determined by the end of 2024.
Metsä Fibre is a key player in the pulp and sawmill industries, producing not only pulp and sawn timber but also bioproducts such as biochemicals and bioenergy. The company’s products, made from northern wood, offer sustainable alternatives to fossil-based materials. Metsä Fibre is committed to promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion within its operations.
In 2023, Metsä Fibre recorded sales of EUR 2.5 billion and employed around 1,600 people. Metsä Group, its parent company, is owned by over 90,000 Finnish forest owners and achieved total sales of EUR 6.1 billion in the same year.
